21 years ago today, June 18th, 1999, the Pittsburgh Steelers started the groundbreaking on their new home, Heinz Field. Heinz Field officially became the home field for the Steelers in the 2001 season. Previous to Heinz Field, the Steelers played their home games at Three Rivers Stadium from 1970-2000.

Heinz Field has been very kind to the Steelers since they moved in at the beginning of the 2001 season. The Steelers have amassed a 109-42-1 record in the regular season and have won 8 of 13 home postseason games as well. Heinz Field is also home to the University of Pittsburgh Panthers who have also seen high degrees of success sporting a .643% winning percentage in 112 games.

Heinz Field, which has a capacity of approximately 68,400 people, has been host to a myriad of events since opening in 2001. The Pittsburgh Penguins have played a couple of games at the stadium, as well as multiple international soccer games including the 2014 International Champions Cup. Heinz Field also has been host to many musicians ranging from Bon Jovi to Kenny Chesney to Taylor Swift. In 2011, multiple scenes from The Dark Knight Rises were shot at Heinz Field.

Through the last 20 years, Heinz Field has seen many renovations. The seating capacity has increased over 3,000 people since 2001 and is expected to continue. Most recently, construction started earlier this spring to open a brand new Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Shop inside the stadium. Heinz Field has one of the most iconic backdrops off of the Allegheny River and the Steelers have the best home fans to fill up the stadium every year.

What is your favorite memory at Heinz Field? What renovations would you like to see made over the next decade? Sound off in the comments below!
