Today, the Pittsburgh Steelers designated both Roosevelt Nix and Ryan Switzer to be their players to return from Injured Reserve this season. Each player will have 21 days from today (12/26) to be added to the active roster, and are now eligible to practice with the team. Nix has been out with a knee injury that happened week 1 against the New England Patriots, and he then re-injured against the Indianapolis Colts. Switzer has been out with a back injury that he sustained during a contest with the Los Angeles Rams.
Even though both players are designated for return, neither are eligible to return until the divisional round of the playoffs. Players designated for return must remain on IR for at least eight weeks, making it still likely that neither player will see the field again this season. This is simply a procedural move that will get some Steelers fans excited, but likely will end up meaning nothing by seasons end.
