What the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to do at the quarterback position in 2022 is going to be at the forefront of the organization's plans as the upcoming off-season is right around the corner. Whether or not the team will decide to address the position through the NFL Draft, or by going after a veteran in free agency, has yet to be determined, leaving everyone's mind to wander. Although, if you asked SteelerNation who they see behind center in 2022, the answers will vary. I think the most popular answer so far has been for the Steelers to sign a veteran, as that would be the best fit for the way this team is currently built.
The reason being is the fact that this team is already in a win now mode and has a top tier defense that could benefit from having a successful offense on the opposite side of the ball to take pressure off. We saw our defensive group not only keep us in games throughout the year last season, but also did their part in closing out football games, doing whatever they could to enable a Steelers win. While the secondary has struggled as of late, the Steelers defensive front has been the top five in total team sacks over the last few seasons, including 55 total sacks in 2021, good for the best in the NFL. Outside linebacker T.J. Watt deserves the bulk of the credit after coming off a Defensive Player of the Year Award for tying the single-season sack record (22.5 total sacks) after signing a multi-year extension prior to the season beginning.

That being said, Watt followed in rookie running back Najee Harris’s footsteps by publicly making a comment on the Steelers potential quarterback situation now that future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has retired. While the team still does still have two young gunslingers in Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins, those particular options are ones that would require some developmental time in order to succeed. As stated before, this Steelers team is one that is ready to win now, and as intriguing as some of these rookie names may be to us fans, both Harris and Watt were asked what avenue they would prefer, and it seems like Watt would prefer to go an alternative route. A feeling shared by most regarding the upcoming situation and that feeling is about winning football games. In an article published by PennLive.com, Watt was quoted saying:
“We’ll see what happens at the quarterback position. I trust the guys upstairs to be able to bring a guy in that can win us some games, and I’m going to do everything in my power to take care of things on the defensive side of the ball.”

Although finding a new franchise quarterback is a position that this team has not been in since drafting Roethlisberger 18 years ago, long time general manager Kevin Colbert has done an amazing job of building a winning culture during his time in Pittsburgh. I think we can all safely say that whoever the Steelers decide to bring in as their leader next season, that he too will endure that same sort of winning mentality that this organization has been all about, because that is the only thing these players are worried about.
Do you think Watt is right to put his trust in the front office to find a winning QB? Comment below!
