Trubisky Market Rising to $10 Million Per Season?

The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to have zeroed in on quarterback Aaron Rodgers if Rodgers decides to leave Green Bay. But that doesn't mean they aren't coming up with options outside of that one.

One of the top linked free agent quarterbacks is former #2 overall selection Mitchell Trubisky. Trubisky flamed out in Chicago, and signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills last season to back up Josh Allen. The Bills organization has raved about Trubisky, and have given him some much needed spark as he prepares to enter free agency looking to become a starting quarterback again.

"I think it’s unrealistic to think we’re going to have him back," Sean McDermott told reporters. Bills general manager Brandon Beane added that he was sure Trubisky would "get a good opportunity to at least compete for a starting job" in 2022.

In today's ESPN insider story by Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler, they discuss Trubisky and his potential salary demands.

Mitchell Trubisky: Teams are openly discussing whether Trubisky gets $10 million or more annually on a new deal. That his name is a hot one is not manufactured. It's real. His career reset in Buffalo went very well, and teams that will look to draft a quarterback could sign Trubisky to start this year. A Trubisky pairing with a first-round quarterback such as Malik Willis wouldn't shock a few teams. The Panthers, Steelers, Commanders, Giants and potential Broncos are believed to be in the mix here.

To put that $10 million per season into context, Trubisky signed a one-year $2.5 million dollar contract to back up Allen last season.

Trubisky threw 8 passes in 2021. And one of those was intercepted. Not exactly earth shattering statistics that would call for him to get a raise of this magnitude.

We've seen quarterbacks like Mike Glennon, Matt Flynn and Ryan Fitzpatrick get insane amounts on the free agent market, and it's turned out bad for all of those teams.

We see this often in the NFL with quarterbacks. Teams get enamored with the players potential that should have translated to the field, but it never did. They believe they can't be the team that brings it out. The Steelers doing that for $2.5 million wouldn't be a big deal. But for $10 million per season, you can't just take a stab in the dark. Hopefully the Steelers are smarter than this trap.
