The 1930s were a different era. Some sports fans might find this unbelievable, but Pennsylvania had something called “blue laws,” which banned sports events on Sundays. Something unimaginable in today's world. Luckily, in 1933, these laws were relaxed, igniting a spark that created the birth of the Pittsburgh Steelers fan base. You could say an official Steelers fan base was born from a simple change in law. United by football, they’ve become one of the most passionate fanbases. Sundays in Pittsburgh were never the same again.

Steelers (Global) Nation

All fans are passionate. That’s what makes them fans. To say some fans are more passionate than others doesn’t really serve much purpose. But you could say Pittsburgh Steelers fans are a bit different, at least. They are called the Steeler Nation, after all. Put this into a broader context of Steelers fans coming from a city with a strong industrial background and heritage, and you might be able to pick up the puzzle pieces faster. So it’s not surprising that Steelers are a global nation. It’s ok if you’re shocked to learn that Pittsburgh Steelers fandom isn't just a local thing. No, it's gone worldwide.

It's crazy how people across the globe have latched onto this team. What's the secret behind this worldwide appeal? Maybe it's the team's history, their never-say-die attitude, or those iconic black and gold uniforms. Whatever it is, it's working. And it is backed by data. According to WPXI, almost 40% of the Steelers fans are based internationally. Partly because the NFL is becoming a global trend. While they've only played one international game since 2013, a loss to the Vikings in London, their brand is particularly strong in Mexico and Ireland. In fact, 9.2% of their fan base is in Mexico, second only to the Dallas Cowboys. This international appeal was evident in 2021 when running back Najee Harris' Spanish interview after a win went viral, further endearing him and the team to their Mexican fans.

How Sportsbooks Played Their Part

Sportsbooks are a good source of data. While brands like Premier Bet primarily serve the betting community, their data is valuable for broader applications. It can be used to identify trends, predict outcomes, or gain a deeper understanding of sports. Why? Well, sportsbook's reliance on accurate information makes them a good source for those seeking in-depth sports analysis. Their data is often presented in a user-friendly format as well. Where are we getting with this? The fact that both the NFL and the Steelers are becoming a worldwide brand. It’s visible from the sportsbook trends and data. On top of that, sportsbooks serve as a unique platform for promoting less popular sports. In this case, the NFL. Either through live streams, promotional offers, social media engagement, or partnerships with teams and athletes.

Steelers are Part of the Bigger Picture

The NFL seems to have a thought out plan, in place. By expanding its reach through initiatives like hosting games in countries such as the UK and Germany the league has introduced the sport to audiences. Additionally, with the help of media and streaming services, teams can now connect with fans worldwide easily. American made content, from Hollywood has significantly influenced our perceptions. That's not to say we're critical. The NFL offers a combination of athleticism, strategy and entertainment that sets it apart from sports (apologies to soccer fans). It's a unique mix of fast-paced action and moments of respite that allow you to take a breather.

The NFLs global markets initiative is also contributing to the cause. This year there are plans to introduce four teams and expand into five new markets. The program is poised for growth with the addition of four teams (the Browns, Lions, Colts and Giants) and expansion, into five new markets (Argentina, Colombia, Japan, Nigeria and South Korea). This development brings news for Pittsburgh Steelers fans as their rights now extend to Germany in addition to Mexico and Ireland. So what does this program entail? It allows teams to connect with fans through avenues like events, business opportunities and fan engagement activities. For Steelers fans in Europe this means that the club has secured rights in Irish markets for least five years to strategize for long term growth. The programs success can be seen in the increasing number of participating clubs and the expansion into markets – a sign of strong interest, from both teams and global audiences.
