But after he logged just six touchdowns a year ago, The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo’s bold prediction heading into this season was that Metcalf would catch double-digit touchdown passes this season.
Why? Despite the additions of Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie Germie Bernard, Aaron Rodgers’ focus on the pocket hasn’t changed.
“When Rodgers was asked how a more well-rounded room could open up the offense,” DeFabo wrote, “the QB made it clear that the passing game still flows through Metcalf. ‘We’ve got to get the ball to DK,’ Rodgers said. ‘He’s our No. 1 for a reason.’”

Will Jaylen Warren have the same role as last year?
If you ask fantasy football owners, they’ll tell you Jaylen Warren isn’t an RB1. But last year, in his first season as the Steelers’ lead back following the departure of Najee Harris, there’s no doubting he had a career year. He doubled his previous career-high in touchdowns with eight, and outpaced his previous career-high in rushing by nearly 175 yards.
We wrote earlier this week about The Drive host Matt Williamson’s comments about Jaylen Warren’s outlook for the 2026-27 season. Williamson’s take? Don’t expect a down year from Warren just because Rico Dowdle is joining him in the backfield.
“I think since [Warren’s] come in the league, he’s been like the most underrated Steeler, and I think it’s still continuing,” Williamson said. “I think he’s a tier above Dowdle just as a football player, and I like Dowdle a lot… I think the roles will be less distinctive than they were in the past… It might just be we’re going to play the hot hand on a week-to-week basis,” he said.
To put a number on the conversation, most sportsbooks are setting Warren’s over/under at about 625 rushing yards this season following a season in which he rushed for 958 as a No. 1 back. How Many Games Will the 2026-27 Steelers Win?
It’s the topic we’ve been discussing since Mike McCarthy was named the Steelers’ new head coach in January. McCarthy has 18 years of experience as an NFL head coach and a .607 winning percentage over such a large sample. Will his familiarity with Rodgers and a hand-picked coaching staff help him lead the Steelers to the playoffs?
Right now, sportsbooks are saying he probably won’t. In Aaron Rodgers’ swan song, with new playmakers and a refreshed look on defense, +168 odds on FanDuel suggest the Steelers are more likely to miss the playoffs than to make it.
