Roethlisberger Releases Statement About Team Staying in Tunnel

Ben Roethlisberger released a statement on Monday afternoon via his web site – BigBen7.com

I was unable to sleep last night and want to share my thoughts and feelings on our team’s decision to remain in the tunnel for the National Anthem yesterday. The idea was to be unified as a team when so much attention is paid to things dividing our country, but I wish we approached it differently. We did not want to appear divided on the sideline with some standing and some kneeling or sitting.

As a team, it was not a protest of the flag or the Anthem. I personally don’t believe the Anthem is ever the time to make any type of protest. For me, and many others on my team and around the league, it is a tribute to those who commit to serve and protect our country, current and past, especially the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice.

I appreciate the unique diversity in my team and throughout the league and completely support the call for social change and the pursuit of true equality. Moving forward, I hope standing for the Anthem shows solidarity as a nation, that we stand united in respect for the people on the front lines protecting our freedom and keeping us safe. God bless those men and women.

My Dear Ben, I regret to inform you your apology is too late! After what occurred yesterday, I am truly disheartened with The Steelers Organization Overall! I am a TRUE BLUE STEELERS NATION GIRL AND NEVER MISSED A GAME DURING THE DECADE OF THE 70’S! THOSE ARE THE PLAYERS I WILL ALWAYS LOOK UP TO! I know you are extremely gifted and talented as well as BLESSES with a BEAUTIFUL FAMILY, and can THANK GOD you are given the FREEDOM to play in a country that has your back! GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL OF OUR MILITARY PERSONAL WHO PROTECT US!

I’m glad you’re upset. How can you & your team disrespect the flag & the anthem??? Alejandro was the only MAN on the team. He stood up for what he believed in. Now he’s being disrespected for believing the right thing. I have been a fan of the Steelers for 55 years & you went ahead & ruined it!!!! No matter what you think it is, most of Americans believe it’s disrespectful to America. Goodbye Steelers, hello Penguins!!!

We in steeler nation are irate and never forget when an opposing team disrespects our terrible towel. Yet, OUR national symbol, the flag and the soldiers who gave their lives were disrespected this past weekend. We all have a right to express our views and to protest and I respect their right to do just that. But I also believe there were more appropriate ways to protest than by disrespecting our flag.
For the first time in 61 years, there was no Sunday football in my home nor any Steeler gear present…my personal protest. For the 1st time in my life I was not proud to be a Steeler. I admire your desire to be united, and believe the steelers have always been the cream of the NFL. They have always had strong beliefs and conducted themselves with class and an unbelievable work ethic and always represented the heart and soul of the city. Win or lose it was always with class. We did more than lose a game Sunday. Our terrible towel is MORE than just a towel to Steeler Nation. OUR flag represents so much more. There is never a reason to disrespect it.
