With the kickoff of the NFL season only seven days away, fans all across the world are chomping at the bit to see the Pittsburgh Steelers start their march towards their seventh Lombardy trophy. President of the Steelers, Art Rooney II recently announced that fans won’t be allowed at Heinz Field for the first two games of the season, but Rooney announced today his plans for the remainder of the season.
Although no guarantees were made, there’s great optimism across the organization that fans will be in the stands starting in October. Rooney does admit that it will ultimately be up to the Pennsylvania governors office, but his hope is to ensure fans line up outside the gates of Heinz field for a majority of Steelers home games this season. Rooney was quoted on SNR saying, “That's what we're here for - our fans. That's kind of the whole point of things. We are playing these games for our fans and trying to win another championship for the city of Pittsburgh”.
The Rooney’s have owned the Steelers for nearly 90 years and have always ensured the fans are at the forefront of the organization, so it’s no surprise Rooney is willing to do anything in his power to have fans in 2020. Rooney was also quoted today saying, “Obviously, we wish that we would be able to welcome our fans to our games coming up here in September. We are just in a different time, an unusual time to say the least”. It’s very evident the Steelers will do whatever it takes to have fans, but the final call may be out of their hands at the end of the day.
This season will inevitably create many firsts for the Steelers and the NFL in general, but the Rooney’s are trying to ensure as much normalcy for the fans as possible. Even if it’s a limited number of fans allowed at Heinz Field in 2020, you better believe they’ll be the most energetic and loud fans in the entire NFL.
