Steelers Reaching Out to Trai Turner

Steelers Reaching Out to Trai Turner

With the news of David DeCastro’s release, the Pittsburgh Steelers suddenly find themselves needing to fill yet another need on the offensive line. Coming into the 2021 NFL Draft, the Steelers were already down three of their projected 2020 Week 1 starters; now down four of those projected starters (DeCastro missed Week 1 due to injury).

While Steelers fans began to speculate and debate what the plan is, Ian Rapoport tweeted that a recently hosted free agent was now in talks with the Steelers: Trai Turner. As many remember, Trai Turner visited the Steelers and left without a deal—bringing forth the speculation of DeCastro’s status on the team. This has now turned speculation into reality: the Steelers are moving on from DeCastro.

Trai Turner was a 3rd round pick out of LSU by the Carolina Panthers. He has been selected to five consecutive Pro Bowls while in Carolina and contributed to the Panthers’ incredible Super Bowl run where they fell short to the Denver Broncos in 2015. He most recently spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers—though in recent seasons he has missed time due to injury.

If Trai Turner is indeed 100% healthy and can return to 2015-2019 form, he could be a valuable asset for the Steelers’ raw, inexperienced offensive line. Time will tell how the Steelers will address another weak spot on a once prolific unit.
