In the wake of an 0-2 start and losing their Hall of Fame franchise quarterback to a season-ending elbow injury in Ben Roethlisberger, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been busy trying to revamp their roster moving forward. Tuesday, former Denver Broncos quarterback, Paxton Lynch (25) was signed to the Steelers practice squad to add a little more depth and competition at the backup quarterback position. Devlin "Duck" Hodges (23) is the only other quarterback on the roster outside newly named starter, Mason Rudolph. Lynch, who is 6'7" and almost 250 pounds, was drafted in the first-round by the Broncos in 2016, and also spent time with the Seattle Seahawks in early 2019.
In other news, most of Steeler Nation is aware of the trade on Monday as the Steelers acquired super versatile and 2018 first-rounder (11th overall) DB Minkah Fitzpatrick, along with a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2021 seventh-round pick from the Miami Dolphins. This was in exchange for the Steelers first and fifth round picks in 2020, and a 2021 sixth-round pick, per NFL Network Insider, Ian Rapoport.
To me, this tells me two things:
- The Steelers believe in Mason Rudolph. By finding another playmaker on the other side of the ball in Fitzpatrick, I believe the Steelers still feel like they are in a "win now" mentality. Having a solid defense will in return help a young quarterback continue to settle in nicely and help him feel more comfortable at the helm.
- Sean Davis. Tuesday, the Steelers placed the starting safety on the Reserve/Injured List for a shoulder injury. With this news, the Steelers knew they needed to fill their safety void and make sure the team can still produce at a high level from that position. Davis injured his shoulder in the week two matchup against Seattle, while missing week one against the New England Patriots with an injury that occurred in training camp.
We have placed S Sean Davis on the Reserve/Injured List (shoulder).
This will open a roster spot for DB Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Additionally, we have added QB Paxton Lynch to the practice squad.
