Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator, Randy Fichtner was asked some questions at his Zoom interview about the problems the team has had scoring prior to Cleveland Browns game. Currently they are on a drought since late 2018 where they haven't scored on an opening drive since. Coach Fichtner addressed this dilema:
"I’ll take scoring every time, and it doesn’t need to be those 13 play drives, I’ll take it in one. Starting fast we talk about openly with our players."
When asked if the Steelers have to consistently score in the 30's to win football games, Coach Fichtner elaborated:
"From a goal standpoint, we have to score more points than they do. Just a general opportunity to score in the red zone and opportunities off of turnovers. We’ve been in a couple situations where we’ve been in pretty good field positions at the end of the game and we’ve done what’s appropriate and run the game out. We’re going to push the envelope as much as we can and try to score early often and as much as we possibly can, but at the end of the day, it has to be one more point than they have."
That is a good point since the Steelers' offense closed out each win this season in victory formation. Even if when they were in the red zone, the Steelers had no intention of increasing the score. Running out the clock with possession at the end of games makes sure the other team can not come back. It is also a big reason why the Steelers' record is undefeated, even if that comes at the expense of an extra score.
