Roethlisberger Hints at 2018 Return

Everyone has an opinion on whether Ben Roethlisberger will continue to play next season and beyond. It's been the hottest topic across water coolers, social media, and surely Heinz Field on gamedays.

All stemming from comments Roethlisberger made after the Steelers lost the AFC Championship game last January.

“I’m going to take this offseason to evaluate, to consider all options,” Roethlisberger said. “To consider health and family and things like that, and just kind of take some time away to evaluate next season, if there’s going to be a next season.”

Those comments surely came out of frustration even though he won't ever admit to it. Leaving a star studded offense with one of the best offensive lines in football would have been absurd. Sure, Roethlisberger is creeping up there in age, but his skill set hasn't diminished and his desire to play still burns bright.

During the season Roethlisberger spoke about 'maybe' not having it anymore after their loss against Jacksonville in which he threw 5 interceptions. It seemed more like a poke at the media questioning his ability than an actual real belief. That story fizzled as the Steelers offense found themselves until again being brought up by Jaguars Defensive players this week.

This morning Roethlisberger was asked if he thought this would be his last game at Heinz Field.

“I'm not thinking about that right now. I don't think it is my last but I'm not thinking about that right now. I'm going out to play this one and give it everything I have.”

He then went on to point at the #50 that was on his t-shirt, and explained that any game could be your last, though he hoped teammate Ryan Shazier will play again.

While time is ticking on Roethlisberger's career, the time was right for the Steelers to invest in offensive linemen. They started in 2010 with Maurkice Pouncey, and continued with David DeCastro, and Marcus Gilbert. The key was to keep him healthy as the end of his career neared and they certainly have done that.
