The Pittsburgh Steelers now 2-0 at the start of the 2020 NFL season, were plagued with penalties against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Ultimately coming out on top 26-21, penalties kept Denver in the game.
Pittsburgh was penalized 10 times for 89 yards, giving the Broncos six first downs on penalties.
"They were a resilient bunch. They fought us the whole way," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "We helped them some. We have a lot of growth ahead of us but it's good to grow while you win. Today, I thought we were loose with the ball some. We turned the ball over, particularly at a significant period in the game.
"We were highly penalized. We'll look at the penalties and look to play cleaner. It was an Achilles heel for us today. It extended drives. It allowed those guys to remain in the game."
"We made the necessary plays. We understand early in the season we are not going to be perfect. We were good enough to win. We will make the necessary corrections tomorrow and then push forward."
Tomlin also talked on special teams who made a few big plays against Denver that helped put the Steelers on top.
Forcing a safety, Derek Watt's tackle on punter Sam Martin in the end zone was one of them.
Steelers' Diontae Johnson and Ray-Ray McCloud also showed off in the return game.
"I am really excited about it," said Tomlin. "I thought Diontae was dynamic. I know we got a penalty on that punt return. But we had explosive plays in the return game. We had some splash with some other guys. I like the overall trajectory of it and we have to continue to grow."
