Steelers Cam Heyward Confused by Another Set of Astonishing ESPN Rankings: "How the heck is [Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson] not a top 10 player?"

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman, Cam Heyward has had some issues with ESPN's top 10 players at each position this offseason. The Steelers' impressive defensive playmaker isn't slowing down anytime soon and put up one of his best seasons to date in 2021 and the ESPN list for top 10 defensive linemen in the league had him dropping in the top 10 to 5th best in the league.

On the first episode of his Not Just Football podcast last week, Heyward defended himself while discussing the ESPN rankings for defensive linemen.

“Dang, like I just came off a heck of a year and I went back?” Heyward questioned the integrity of the list. “That seems very confusing to me and you know, I’m looking through it, AD’s [Aaron Donald] first, Jeffery Simmons is second, he was out of the top 10 last year, Chris Jones is third, he was second last year, DeForest Buckner, he was three last year, and then I’m 5. So, I dropped out, but then I had a better year before.

And then I look at this, and they say, ‘look at his numbers and watch him, there’s no decline at all.’ If there’s no decline at all, how the hell did I drop?”

On Wednesday’s episode of Heyward‘s Not Just Football, Heyward discussed the rankings once more, but not the ones for his position. He wanted to discuss the ESPN rankings of the quarterback position in which, Steelers' division rival, Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson was completely left out of the top 10 conversation completely.

Steelers TJ Watt Lamar Jackson

"How the heck is he not a top 10 player?" Heyward questioned the integrity of the list once again. "You know this guy just won an MVP two years ago, I have the utmost respect for a guy like Lamar. Is he the prototypical quarterback? No, but who's to say quarterbacks have to play a certain way?"

"You watched games where Mike Vick used to take off and dominate games with his feet and was able to still throw, I like to think Lamar is part of that as well. And the more he can do the more he can dominate. He's he's a younger guy that's going to continue to develop and be one of the greats in our league. He's a humble guy that focuses on his teammates and I just think he is a top player, a top quarterback in our league."

Not only has Heyward questioned where he should have been on the ESPN rankings, everyone should feel the need to defend themselves, but when a player goes to bat for a division rival, the integrity of the list should be questioned whole-heartedly.
