Why Steelers and Roethlisberger have not met about contract

Ben Roethlisberger hasn’t met with the Pittsburgh Steelers yet regarding his contract, per Gary Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

Thank goodness for Captain Obvious.

Clickbait articles aside—there’s a pretty logical reason that is conveniently ignored. The 2021 NFL salary cap has yet to be determined as the TV rights agreements could top 10 years & $100 billion -- although other deals are also reported (7 years at $14B per year & 8 years at $12B per year). To compare, the NFL received $6.4B in 2020. The NFL’s addition of an extra game plus the 10-year labor agreement between the NFL and NFLPA is beneficial in its favor.

The wildcard is the ESPN+ push to replace Direct TV for NFL Sunday Ticket — meaning ABC will want in Super Bowl rotation. Also Amazon can factor in as NBC, FOX, and CBS aren’t interested in sharing games with the streaming service.

Bottom line is the salary cap situation is very much in flux and could change drastically—which would impact many decisions on Roethlisberger, Bud Dupree, Zach Banner, JuJu Smith Schuster and many other Steelers free agency decisions.
