The Pittsburgh Steelers may have another intriguing wide receiver to consider before the NFL trade deadline, and Ladd McConkey could be exactly the type of player their offense needs. With questions surrounding Pittsburgh's passing game and its ability to consistently sustain drives, acquiring a receiver who can create separation underneath could give Aaron Rodgers another reliable option.

Jason La Canfora discussed the possibility of Pittsburgh targeting McConkey during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan's PM Team w/Poni and Mueller, offering a compelling explanation for why the Los Angeles Chargers receiver could make sense in Pittsburgh.
"McConkey looks like the kind of slot guy that Aaron Rodgers has always worked with," La Canfora said.
That assessment makes sense when considering the types of receivers Rodgers has traditionally relied on throughout his career. While the Steelers already have DK Metcalf as a prominent outside target, adding a receiver who can consistently win underneath and work the middle of the field could give the passing game a different dimension.
McConkey had an impressive rookie season in which he established himself as one of the NFL's promising young receivers. Although his production dipped in 2025, he remains a young playmaker with the potential to help an offense immediately.
For Pittsburgh, the appeal is obvious. The Steelers need to find ways to make their passing attack more consistent, and McConkey's skill set could complement what they already have on the roster.
Why The Steelers Could Target McConkey Before The Trade Deadline
McConkey has not consistently replicated his rookie production, but they do not erase the potential he demonstrated in his first NFL season. At 24 years old, he also offers something Pittsburgh would not get from adding another veteran receiver, the possibility of remaining a productive contributor for several seasons.
His contract situation could make him a more complicated target than an impending free agent, however. McConkey is still on his rookie contract, giving the Chargers a reason to hold onto a young receiver who has already demonstrated that he can produce at a high level. That is an important consideration for General Manager Omar Khan. The Steelers would need to determine whether Los Angeles is genuinely willing to move McConkey and, if so, what kind of draft compensation it would require.

The Chargers' struggles could create an interesting situation. If the organization decides to make changes to its roster rather than continue pushing for immediate results, it could consider offers for certain players. However, a difficult season does not automatically mean Los Angeles would be willing to trade one of its young offensive weapons.
Pittsburgh would also face competition from other teams searching for help at receiver. If the Steelers believe McConkey is a particularly good fit for Rodgers, they would need to weigh the potential offensive improvement against the cost of acquiring him.
Ultimately, the attraction goes beyond simply adding another name to the receiving room. McConkey could help Pittsburgh diversify its passing attack, create more opportunities for Metcalf and give Rodgers a receiver whose strengths align with the way he has operated throughout his career.
La Canfora's comments provide a legitimate reason to monitor the situation, but speculation should not be confused with confirmed trade talks. The Steelers have not publicly established that McConkey is their preferred target, and the Chargers have not indicated that he is available.
Still, if Pittsburgh is serious about upgrading its offense before the deadline, McConkey deserves consideration. He has already shown that he can produce at the NFL level, and his ability to work from the slot could address a different need than another traditional outside receiver.
The Steelers do not necessarily need another superstar to improve their passing game. They need players who complement their existing personnel and help Rodgers distribute the ball more effectively. If McConkey becomes available at a reasonable price, he could be one of the more intriguing options for Pittsburgh to explore.
