Whether you’re a long-term football fan discovering a new team, or you like the excitement of the game, like the feeling you get while playing at Luxury Casino Canada, and want to try following sports, it’s great to prepare for the season. So let's take a brief look at the history of Pittsburgh's beloved football team: how it came to be and why so many people love them so much.
The Beginning
The history of the team can be traced back to the 1920's when they were originally known as a regional pro team named the Pirates. The team entered the National Football League in 1933 under the name the Pittsburgh Pirates, owned by Art Rooney, who was its owner until his death in 1988.
In 1940, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ran a contest among its readers for a new name. The participants suggested a list of possible names, which was handed to a special panel that chose "Steelers" as the best option. This name honored the heritage of the Pittsburgh steel industry.
The Steel Curtain
The Steelers’ first plays during the 1930's did not bring much success to the team. They faced player shortages during World War II and had to merge with other teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Cardinals.
After the war ended, the Steelers made it into their first playoff appearance in 1947 – but lost! They spent the next years working on their strategies and changing coaches, before finally coming up with a winning idea that brought them a victory at the Super Bowl in 1974. In the 1970's, they won four Super Bowl championships, proving that the Steel Curtain defensive line was a success.
The group of five players who made up this defense was led by Joe Greene at defensive tackle, L.C. Greenwood at the end, along with Ernie Holmes at nose tackle; all three were named All-Pro multiple times over their careers in Pittsburgh. Dwight White was another starting linebacker during this period of dominance for the Steelers' defense; he helped lead them to four Super Bowl titles between 1974-1980.

The Modern Era Steelers
The Steelers have won six Super Bowls, including the most recent one in 2008. In addition to these championships, there have been many great players who have played for Pittsburgh over the years, including Terry Bradshaw, Joe Greene, and Franco Harris. Some notable coaches who coached for more than one season include Chuck Noll (1969-1991), Bill Cowher (1992-2006), and Mike Tomlin (2007-present).
Conclusion
The Steelers are one of the most storied franchises in NFL history, and their fans are some of the most dedicated. If you're new to Steeler Nation, we hope this article has inspired you to learn more about this incredible team!
