6 Pittsburgh Steelers That Could Break Out For The 2023-24 NFL Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers have maintained a long-lasting streak of competitiveness stretching back decades now. Yet it seems like the hype for this year's roster is muted. After a finish to last season where the Steelers performed like bona fide contenders, no one should be overlooking this team. They have top-end young talent and a bunch of young skilled players that could take the next step. Even in a stacked AFC North, if some of the Steelers players take a step up, the team can compete for at least a division crown.

But who on the Steelers is poised for a breakout? On betting sites like PowerPlay sportsbook, you won't see many Steelers listed for major awards, and the Steelers have unexceptional odds to reach the Super Bowl. However, there are some players that are positioned for new levels of success this season, with breakouts that could lead to a huge season for the team and potentially big payouts for bettors. Let's look at the six Steelers poised for a breakout 2023-24 NFL season.

Kenny Pickett

Kenny Pickett's rookie season was a mixed bag, but there were promising developments that bode well for this year down the road. Pickett's ability to make plays shone through, and even though his TD-INT ratio was poor, he led the team to a 7-5 record. That's exceptional for a rookie, particularly considering how poorly the offensive line played early last year. Now, the O-line is retooled with free agents and draftees, and Pickett is in a much better position. He is a solid athlete and has a winning mentality, and now with another year of learning and development, he could become the franchise QB many hope he will be.

Najee Harris

Steelers running back Najee Harris

Najee Harris is an interesting breakout candidate because he has already technically broken out with a strong rookie year. However, he regressed majorly last year and has yet to average 4.0 yards per carry for a season. Here’s betting that changes. The Steelers brought in Broderick Jones and Isaac Seumalo to shore up the trenches, and that is sure to make a major impact on Harris. All too often, Harris was hit behind the line of scrimmage last season. With better blocking, Harris could turn into the superstar he was projected to be out of Alabama.

George Pickens

George Pickens had a fascinating rookie year because he showed so much, yet didn't establish himself as a game-changer. There were games where his unmatched speed, size, and athleticism combo were too much for opponents, like his 100-yard game against the New York Jets. But there were also games he went quiet, and he only ended up with four touchdowns on the year. Here's betting that changes this season. Pickens looks likely to be the primary option for Pickett this season, and if the Steelers' aerial attack improves, he'll be a massive beneficiary. This could be a 1,000-yard, 8+ touchdown season for the young star.

Joey Porter Jr.

Steelers fans are likely familiar with Joey Porter Jr.’s father, long-time Steeler linebacker, Joey Porter. But they’ll get to become familiar with this stud rookie this season. After slipping surprisingly out of the first round, Porter Jr. landed in the Steelers' lap, and the team will benefit greatly from this. The secondary struggled last season, but now, with Porter Jr. likely locked into a starting role opposite new signee Patrick Peterson, the team has a dynamic combo of outside corner talent. Expect Porter Jr. to hold his own in coverage and entrench himself as a rookie.

Cole Holcomb

Cole Holcomb was something of an underrated signing this offseason, but he will be playing an important role as the Steelers starting MLB this season. Holcomb has found success playing a similar role for the Washington Commanders, but hasn't had his name mentioned much, despite a 142-tackle season in 2021. But as a fifth-round pick in 2019, it has been hard for him to find attention. That will change this year as he takes over an important role in the middle of the defense. If he can help the Steelers solve their tackling problem, he'll get the acclaim he deserves.

Pat Freiermuth

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end, Pat Freiermuth, makes a touchdown catch against the Detroit Lions.

Pat Freiermuth is another player that arguably has already broken out, but this year could be the season he establishes himself as a Pro Bowl talent and a top-end performer. Freiermuth racked up 732 yards last year as the Steelers starting tight end, but only got in the end zone twice. If the Steelers passing offense takes the steps many expect, the game will open up for Freiermuth. This could be the year where he puts himself into the conversation as one of the five best TEs in the game. If Pickett develops, it seems likely Freiermuth will become a star for the Steelers.
