The Pittsburgh Steelers will head into the new National Football League season with a point to prove after a disappointing 2022 campaign. The team posted a 9-8 record to finish third in the AFC North and will be eager to force their way back into playoff contention in 2023. Mike Tomlin’s squad has progressed to the postseason just twice in the last five years, and were beaten in the Wild Card round on each occasion. You have to go back to 2017 to find the last time Pittsburgh reached the AFC Championship Game, which ended in a 36-17 defeat against the New England Patriots.

The Steelers last won the Super Bowl in the 2008-09 season and it is tough to imagine them emerging as title contenders this season. However, they undoubtedly have the ability to make it to the playoffs if everything falls into place. Read on as we preview the season ahead.

NFL Super Bowl 2023 Odds
Online bookmakers have written off the Steelers’ chances of winning the Super Bowl, with only seven teams below them in the latest outright betting. Several of the sportsbooks linked to the casino sites listed at haz-tayeb.com/en/ rate Pittsburgh as 50/1 shots to get the job done next season. However, it is not beyond the realms of possibility for the Steelers to upset the oddsmakers by claiming their first AFC North title since 2020. They are 11/2 to claim top spot and there a plenty of reasons to believe that price represents good value in a competitive division.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 Preview
The Steelers have been tipped to finish bottom of AFC North, but that has never happened during Tomlin’s 16-year spell as head coach. His team boasts plenty of top-class defensive talents who have the ability to carry the Steelers into the postseason. However, Tomlin will need second season quarterback Kenny Pickett to build on a promising debut campaign if the Steelers are to be successful next term.

Steelers quarterback, Kenny Pickett (#8) makes a throw during 2022 training camp.
Pickett led the Steelers to six wins in their final seven games last season to demonstrate he could handle the pressure of playing in the NFL. The NFL schedule looks fairly favorable for Pittsburgh, with several respected pundits predicting a 12-5 record could be achievable. That would put them in contention to win the AFC North, although the Cincinnati Bengals may have something to say about that.
Pittsburgh will need improvements in their offensive line next season, with several players heading into the new campaign with question marks hanging over them. Progressing to the postseason is certainly possible for the Steelers, but they may have to wait a little longer before becoming genuine Super Bowl contenders again.
