The Pittsburgh Steelers were in some trouble during the 2022 season as they had their best player TJ Watt out due to a pectoral injury. When he was on the field though, the team looked to perform way better than they did when he was not. He even almost helped them get into the playoffs. With Watt growing in age and the Steelers not having any major contracts pending, the time seems to be now for them to make a run at the Super Bowl.

The Steelers Have Had Little Success Over The Past 10 Years

Pittsburgh's last playoff win came in 2016 against the Kansas City Chiefs before they had Patrick Mahomes. The last time they even made the playoffs came in 2021. With that being said, it is time for a change and for them to bring back the winning culture that they once had. The leader behind this change will have to be Watt.

During his time with the team, he has yet to win a playoff game, going 0-4. Watt had recently just arrived at training camp and commented his thoughts on this issue saying to get to a Super Bowl, they have to at least win a playoff game. He seems to be fired up and frustrated with how his team performed over the past few years.

Watt should not take all the blame though. Someone that should be going into the hot seat as training camp starts is offensive coordinator, Matt Canada. A lot of eyes will be on him and the offense to see if they can finally take a step forward instead of back.

This isn't the first time that Watt has mentioned that winning a Super Bowl is at the top of his priority list. During this offseason, he was on former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's podcast, Footbahlin, where he asked him what it was like to win one. Roethlisberger responded saying that it was unbelievable. This may have been the fire that Watt needed to set his goal of being a Super Bowl champion.

Watt has been able to have a great career already winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award. He is a five-time Pro Bowler, two-time Deacon Jones Award winner, and much more. If he can finish his career as a Super Bowl champion, then he should have no problem getting into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The main reason why the Steelers are in win-now mode is because of how much money they have been able to spend. With that, they have been able to make some additions to hopefully change Watt's mindset. That is just one of the many perks of having your starting quarterback on a rookie contract. This has allowed them to extend players like Alex Highsmith to big contracts and spend some money on big names like Patrick Peterson and Isaac Seumalo in free agency.

After the Steelers were able to extend Highsmith, they secured most of the players that they needed so that they don't have any worries next free agency. This extension also allows the coaches to focus more on winning, rather than things outside of playing. Pittsburgh should be all set for the 2023 season and could end up being a dark horse to win the Super Bowl.
