Steelers' Diontae Johnson Makes An Insane 2023 Training Camp Catch; Looks To Be Back In Pro Bowl Form

Possibly the Pittsburgh Steelers' best position group for the 2023 season is their wide receivers. After last year's rookie sensation George Pickens came out of nowhere, the Steelers look to now have two solid options for their number one guy. The other guy is Diontae Johnson. He struggled during the 2022 season as he was unable to score a touchdown, and this had the fans turn on him a bit. Although he had a rough season last year however, 2023 should look nothing like this as he should turn things around.

Something that will help him turn things around are the guys that he has around him. He now has Pickens who was one of the most impressive rookies last season. Allen Robinson II is also there. He was a former Pro Bowl receiver. The Steelers also have Calvin Austin III as well, who could be one of the fastest receivers in the league. This is just some of their receivers that they have and that's not even mentioning the stacked tight end room in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers Have Set Up One Of The Best Receiving Rooms In The League

The focus of camp in pads so far has been on Pickens after he made an insane catch earlier this week. But Johnson has been looking great at camp this year as well. He even made his own insane catch that hasn't gotten talked about enough.

Having two stud receivers like Pickens and Johnson is a great problem to have. It means that there won't be a number one or number two guy at the position. Hopefully, it turns out that they are both number one guys. It should set the Steelers up to have one of the best receiving rooms in the league.

What makes Johnson so special is his route running and footwork. You could honestly say that he has the best footwork in the NFL. The way that he is able to create separation is unreal and leaves him open a good amount of the time. This is probably why quarterback Kenny Pickett threw to him more than anyone else on the team in 2022.

Johnson's route-running ability has been known to be great ever since he entered the league. The concerns about him come with catching and going forward after the catch. If he can get those things down, he can be a top wide receiver in the NFL.

It looks as though he has been able to get things figured out. At 27 years old, it is time for him to take his game up a notch and become a top-caliber receiver. He is now in the prime of his career and this could be a make or break year for him.

The potential is there when it comes to Johnson, and everyone knows it. Even 93.7 The Fan's Adam Crowley commented how there is so much more production that should be done from a receiver. With the skillset he has now, if he can figure out the quirks that he has to his game, he can be one of the best.

"He's a great route runner and he will do things at times that will absolutely mystify you," Crowley said. "He'll leave corners in the dust. He will do something that makes my mouth drop, but there's so much more to production as a receiver than running a good route."
