Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has had a lot of success in his football coaching career, however it seems that is not the only thing he is good at. He has three children who he has raised while maintaining such a consistent and stable coaching career in the NFL. One of Tomlin's three children, Mason Tomlin, has found success on the football field and on the stage as he is an aspiring rapper who is also a defensive back at Columbia University.

Head Coach Mike Tomlin will have his most talented Steelers squad in years, as the front office rejuvenated the roster this offseason.
Mike is known as being a great NFL coach, mainly because of his intimidating yet motivating demeanor. There might be obvious pressure on an NFL head coach's children, especially a son, to both participate in football and succeed at it. Some might think that pressure is even more amplified when both your parents were collegiate athletes, as Mike played college football at William & Mary and his wife, Kiya Tomlin, was a gymnast at the school as well. However, Mason recently opened up to the New York Post and explained that there has never been any pressure on him or his siblings.
"They always had a rule, you don't have to do our thing. But you got to do something. Doesn't matter what it is, but it better be something."
Mason was very appreciative and grateful towards his father for his ability to alleviate the pressure put on his children and to separate his fatherhood from his coaching. Mason always thought basketball was his primary sport while growing up, and said he loved playing that the most, but didn't realize how good he was at football until his first Division 1 offer from Columbia came in.

One of the main reasons Mason chose to attend Columbia University and accept their football scholarship was because it is located in New York City, which is a great spot for a young aspiring rapper to be located. Last Spring, Mason was able to perform at Columbia's annual Spring concert called the Bacchanal. It was reported that many of his friends and a bunch of his college teammates were in attendance to cheer him on and watch him perform.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Always Put Fatherhood First
Mike got his start in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Tony Dungy hired him as a young 28 year old. Tomlin had recently become a father as his first child was three months old at the time, and he was nervous about the demands of being a coach in the NFL and how to balance that with fatherhood as he told The Pivot in an episode released back in 2022.
"Am I going to meet the demands of the job? How am I going to balance the job with fatherhood? I just didn't know what it looked like. I didn't know what the NFL looked like and how I was going to function in it. I didn't know what fatherhood looked like."
Mike was concerned as a new father and a new member of the NFL coaching brotherhood, and rightfully so. It is a high demanding job all throughout the year, and wanting to be a good father and be there for your new child has to take priority. He explained how Dungy unintentionally put all of his worries at ease, while showing him how to be a good coach and father simultaneously.
"I'm trying to figure out how to navigate all that. My first day on the job, we had a press conference. He [Dungy] said come by his office, he had something he wanted to talk to me about. I walked in his office, the lights were off, and his son was sitting there on the floor playing video games. He showed me in an instant that all the things I was worried about were manageable."
Dungy showed Mike how to be a good coach and father. Mike carried that with him and has been a great parent to his three children. He has pushed his son Mason just the right amount to allow him to be great on the field, while also maintaining a growing music career. Steelers fans already knew how great of a coach Mike was, but now get a glimpse into how he has excelled as a father.
