There is no doubt that the Pittsburgh Steelers need help when it comes to the cornerback position. Joey Porter Jr. quickly emerged during his rookie season in 2023, but aside from his dominant defending, everyone else deserved sincere criticism. Patrick Peterson was released after he didn't live up to expectations and Levi Wallace remains unsigned. Overall, there has been a significant void left for Head Coach Mike Tomlin and co. since Mike Hilton left town and joined the Cincinnati Bengals. A legitimate slot corner is necessary in today's NFL, which can lead one to believe that the organization may target one in the 2024 NFL Draft.

There are plenty of reasons why the Steelers should go after a defensive back in the first round, but offensive tackle, center and wide receiver are likely to be higher on the priority list. Pittsburgh selecting a lineman and wideout in the first two rounds is more than palpable, which could defer the selection of a cornerback until later on during the second day.
Pittsburgh will often show its hand when it comes to draft prospects that are drawing interest. On Monday, it was reported that the Steelers would host Rutgers corner, Max Melton, for a top 30 visit. The athletic corner projects as the perfect size to play slot at the professional level. He has the speed to keep up with the NFL's shiftiest route-runners after posting a 4.39 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.
Melton played in 41 collegiate games over the course of four seasons and was able to capture eight interceptions. He's more than just a guy who can guard opposing receivers; he has big play ability too. Hilton's success after leaving the Steel City is a reminder that a slot corner can be extremely valuable. Melton fits the mold for what the franchise looks for in that area. Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin has to enjoy the prospect of the former Scarlet Knight being drafted in the third round.

When taking a look at the cornerback room, Porter and Jackson are the two that lead the way as the draft approaches. If the franchise believes that 2023 seventh-round pick Cory Trice Jr. is a blossoming star coming off an ACL tear, that would be relatively surprising. There are going to be upgrades in the secondary, but every NFL Draft comes with no guarantees.
The idea of Peterson coming back to town is becoming increasingly more likely, but Melton's top 30 visit tied in with his projected draft status just makes sense. If the Steelers are able to bring in an agile and potentially stud slot corner in round three, it would absolutely make sense to hold off in that area and focus on the offensive line and wide receiver first.
A return of Wallace also presents an interesting discussion. He wasn't nearly as productive in his Steelers' tenure as fans would have liked, but without knowing how well a draft pick will pan out, a veteran who has proven his abilities has to be brought up. Whether it's Peterson or Wallace, fans should anticipate one of the two returning in 2024.

Steelers Ignoring Slot Corner In The Draft And Bringing Back Veteran Not Out Of The Question
Peterson was let go by the organization, but that doesn't mean he won't be back playing for Pittsburgh in 2024. The veteran has the wherewithal to play anywhere in the secondary on defense. He showed in 2023 that he is past his prime on the outside, but that doesn't mean he's incapable of contributing. His savviness might warrant a call if the Steelers are unable to land their desired contributor in the area, specifically Melton.
