The Pittsburgh Steelers received surprising news when it was revealed that their longstanding captain, Cameron Heyward, would be skipping Organized Team Activities (OTAs) for the first time in his career. Heyward explained that he was skipping OTAs to secure a new deal with Pittsburgh before returning to the team.

On Tuesday, Steelers insider Gerry Dulac gave fans some good news, revealing that Heyward had rejoined the team for the third week of OTAs.

While this is a positive development for the Steelers and their fans, it does not necessarily mean Heyward is content. Upon his return, Heyward faced multiple questions about his future. Speaking to ESPN's Brooke Pryor, Heyward clarified that while he returned, it doesn't indicate any positive progress behind the scenes regarding his new deal.
Cam Heyward said him reporting today isn’t indicative of the status of contract negotiations with the Steelers, and he added he wants to play for three more years.

More to come
Heyward emphasized his desire to be a "one helmet" guy, clearly stating how much longer he wants to play. At 35 years old, he hopes to continue for at least three more seasons, ideally finishing his career in Pittsburgh. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo reported that Heyward will attend minicamp and be present when training camp starts. However, the possibility of Heyward holding in remains.
Cam Heyward returned to Steelers OTAs today. He said he plans to attend minicamp next week and to be present for the start of training camp at Saint Vincent. However, he would not say if he plans to practice in training camp. The possibility of a “hold in” exists. Story coming

A hold-in is not the same as a hold-out. In a hold-in, a player is present at training camp, but does not participate in team activities until his contract dispute is resolved. While it's better than a hold-out, it still sends a similar message. Heyward is unhappy about not getting a new deal, but felt it necessary to be around the team. The situation in Pittsburgh regarding Heyward's future continues to evolve, but it appears likely that he will suit up for the Steelers in 2024.

The idea of Heyward finishing his remarkable career anywhere other than Pittsburgh seems improbable, but it could become a reality if the Steelers do not offer a satisfactory new deal. Heyward revealed that he skipped OTAs to make the best decision for himself.
His return does not signify any positive developments from his perspective. As a team leader, he likely felt it was time to be back with his teammates. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining if the Steelers organization and Heyward can reach an agreement.
At this stage in Heyward's career, he is battling against father time—a battle no one ever truly wins. However, he remains confident that he still has three solid years of football left. As he enters the final year of his contract extension, Heyward wants the Steelers to secure his future so he doesn't have to worry about it. Skipping OTAs was a strategic move to help his cause.

Steelers' Cameron Heyward Is Still Not Happy With The Organization
It remains uncertain how Heyward's contract situation will unfold. While his return to the team is a positive sign, the Steelers will make the best decision for their organization, and Heyward will also consider his best options. The team would love to have Heyward happy and back playing for them in 2024. It seems unlikely that he won't be but anything can happen in the NFL.
