The Pittsburgh Steelers were exceptionally active this offseason, making significant efforts to enhance their team across all aspects. One of the standout moves was signing star linebacker Patrick Queen to a three-year deal worth $41 million. On Thursday, it was revealed that the Steelers had targeted another key defensive player.

Former Carolina Panthers safety Jeremy Chinn appeared on The SiriusXM Blitz with Bruce Murray and Rick Spielman on Thursday. During the show, Chinn disclosed that he had been offered more money by the Steelers, but chose to join the Washington Commanders, believing it to be a better fit for him.

"I can't remember if it was a multi-year deal, but I did get another offer. I think Pittsburgh was probably a little bit more money. But just the situation here with Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt and Jason Simmons and TD [Thomas Donatell], this is where I'm supposed to be man. I know this is where I'm supposed to be."

Chinn ultimately signed with the Commanders on a one-year deal worth $4 million. His career began with the Panthers when he was selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Over his four seasons with the Panthers, Chinn accumulated impressive stats: 324 combined tackles, four sacks, two interceptions, two touchdowns, 17 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. He started in 50 games for the Panthers, proving his reliability and skill on the field.

Joining the Commanders brings a lot of excitement, as Chinn is seen as a highly productive player who can fit well into many defensive schemes. The fact that the Steelers attempted to secure him with an offer exceeding $4 million highlights his value.

Instead, the Steelers signed safety DeShon Elliott to bolster their defense. While Elliott is a solid addition, Chinn’s presence could have added another dynamic playmaker to an already talented Steelers defense. The decision adds an interesting layer to the offseason moves and showcases the competitive nature of team-building in the NFL.

Chinn felt the Commanders offered a more favorable situation, likely due to the opportunity for a greater impact in Washington's less crowded secondary. For the Steelers, their defense is already on the cusp of peaking, with playmakers at every level. While Chinn is an exciting player who would have undoubtedly bolstered their defense, he wasn't a necessity.

Steelers Almost Added Another Playmaker To Their Loaded Defense

The Steelers boast the highest-paid defense in the NFL and are expected to be one of the league's best in 2024. The addition of Cam Sutton on Wednesday further strengthened their lineup, and signing him for the veteran minimum was a fantastic deal. However, Sutton's arrival comes with legal issues, a sensitive subject that could bring controversy to the team. Despite this, the Steelers' defense is well set up but could have been even more formidable had Chinn decided to join them.

Adding Chinn to the roster would have provided an additional layer of versatility and depth, potentially elevating the Steelers' defensive schemes to new heights. His ability to play multiple positions and make dynamic plays would have complemented the existing talent perfectly. However, the Commanders' offer likely presented Chinn with a clearer path to a starting role and a chance to shine in a defense where his impact could be more immediately felt.

Overall, the Steelers remain a defensive powerhouse, with or without Chinn. Their strategic acquisitions and the existing talent pool set them up for a strong season. The decision ultimately reflects Chinn's desire for a more significant role and the opportunity to make an immediate impact, something Washington was better positioned to offer.
