Steelers’ Mike Tomlin Motivated Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts: “Run Through A Wall For This Man”

The Pittsburgh Steelers recently began their third week of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), coinciding with a series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Los Angeles Dodgers. With some extra time on their hands, Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts, along with a few staff members, decided to visit Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin.

"It's voluntary workouts, so each day Coach Tomlin addresses the guys. Today was about the exclamation point, and finishing plays and doing things the right way. It was applicable to everybody on a football field, but also in life and in baseball. I was ready to run through a wall for this man. He's done it for so long and won so consistently. But to have that energy every day, every year, is, for me, fascinating."

He described Tomlin's remarkable ability to connect with both his staff and players, emphasizing how motivating and uplifting the experience was. According to Roberts, Tomlin's passion and energy are infectious, leaving everyone around him feeling charged and ready to take on any challenge. 

The Dodgers had been experiencing a bit of an offensive slump, but after their managers encounter with Tomlin, they seemed revitalized. Despite not being known as an offensive mastermind, Tomlin's energy may have inspired the Dodgers to ignite their bats, as evidenced by their 11-7 victory over the Pirates following the meeting.

The Pirates had won the first two games of the series, with the Dodgers claiming the last one. While it’s unlikely that the meeting with Tomlin directly impacted the on-field outcome, it certainly left a lasting impression on Roberts and his staff. Nevertheless, Tomlin remains hopeful and confident that he can turn things around in 2024, backed by numerous positive changes within the organization. If the Steelers do not win a playoff game in 2024, the fans will call for him to be fired once again. However, his coaching resume speaks for itself.
