With NFL Draft fever reaching a frenzy for Pittsburgh Steelers fans, it’s easy for low key acquisitions to go under the radar. And Travis Homer, with no disrespect intended, is not a player that has particularly moved the needle in recent seasons.

But the Steelers have picked up a special teams ace that doubles up as a running back in his own right, so Homer’s versatility could come in very handy this season. Could the 27-year-old be a useful addition in Pittsburgh’s quest to go beyond the Wild Card Round of the playoffs for the first time since 2017?
Special Team Player
The preseason NFL odds can move when big name trades take place. Homer isn’t of that ilk, of course, which is why the Steelers remain a +8000 chance to win Super Bowl LXI next year.
But the Super Bowl betting lines should be considered a guide rather than a rock-solid predictor of the future: think back to Super Bowl LX, which was contested by the Seahawks (+6500) and the Patriots (+7500).
Homer is a former Seahawk himself, of course, with four seasons under his belt at Seattle before making the switch to the Bears in 2023, where he remained up until his switch to Pittsburgh.

The likelihood is that he will continue in his role in the kick and punt crew, but Mike McCarthy will be aware that Homer can stand in as a running back in his own right.
But it’s his punt returns for which the Miami Hurricanes alumni is best known, with a handful of touchdowns coming in the 2021 season, including a 44-yard dash against the Jaguars with just 1:49 left on the clock.
Occasionally, Homer acted as both a rusher and a receiver in Chicago, so it’s that versatility that perhaps attracted the Steelers’ recruitment team to the opportunities that he can bring to the Pittsburgh party.
On the Offense
McCarthy will presumably see Homer as a direct replacement for Connor Heyward, the tight end/running back/special teams contributor who has now moved on to the Raiders.
It won’t be the only new face that the new head coach welcomes into the fold this offseason, but he’ll be very keen to get some value-adding personnel in as well as pure roster depth.
Rico Dowdle is certainly an interesting starting point. He is an all-purpose running back and kick returner, delivering more than 1,000 rushing yards in each of his last two campaigns for the Cowboys and the Panthers, as well as some very handy receiving yards into the bargain.
With a knack for crossing into the endzone, Dowdle is an outstanding pick up, an almost guaranteed starter in McCarthy’s new-look team.

Michael Pittman Jr is another new signing that brings scoring potential as well as some traditional Pittsburgh grit, so McCarthy’s offensive options have been enhanced exponentially even at this early stage of the offseason.
He will roll out run-heavy offensive plans, you suspect, with little in the way of innovation or risk, just good old-fashioned ham bam, right up the middle.
It could be just the tonic for a Steelers outfit that has continually hit that Wild Card ceiling over the past decade.
