For much of the offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have dealt with immense uncertainty in the quarterback room. But those worries seem resolved following news that Aaron Rodgers is likely to return for a second year.

Steelers quarterbacks Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Aaron Rodgers warm up prior to Pittsburgh's 34-12 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 11 of the 2025 NFL regular season.
The news is already having an impact on public confidence in the Steelers, something which fans can see in real-time by checking the best prediction market apps like Kalshi and Polymarket. Each of them has active markets on how many wins Pittsburgh will record next season and reports of Rodgers returning have already affected those odds, with a 3% spike in their chances of winning eight or more games.
The 42-year-old coming back will undeniably boost the team’s chances of success. But while the narrative shifts from “will he sign?” to “will he be the difference-maker?”, the benefits extend far beyond his on-field talent.
The Mike McCarthy connection
A reunion between Rodgers and new head coach Mike McCarthy isn’t guaranteed to work. Their relationship while working together with the Green Bay Packers soured toward the end following nearly 13 seasons of collaboration.
But there can be no question that McCarthy helped elevate Rodgers’ game, which saw him win two of his four MVP awards in 2011 and 2014. While the veteran’s best days are behind him, he knows the Steelers’ new head coach’s playbook better than anyone.
Since McCarthy’s arrival was confirmed, Rodgers has been full of praise for his old coach, mentioning how the two have kept in contact. It certainly seems as though time has healed any wounds, and having the two of them calling the shots on offense will no doubt help Pittsburgh make a more effective transition away from the Mike Tomlin era.
The anchor on offense
While Rodgers’ return will make McCarthy’s transition easier, it’s important to also stress how much good it will do for the rest of Pittsburgh’s offense. Handing the keys to Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, or Drew Allar would have compounded this offseason's massive upheaval.
Particularly for the young quarterbacks, adjusting to NFL defenses while trying to stabilize a transitioning roster would have been a monumental task. Rodgers, though, provides an element of continuity that the likes of DK Metcalf and existing offensive linemen can lean on.

He also makes life easier for new arrivals. Max Iheanachor could very well be the starting left tackle after Broderick Jones’ neck injury, and having someone who gets the ball out quickly will help him learn the ropes more effectively. Factor in the role Rodgers will play in integrating Rico Dowdle and Michael Pittman Jr. too, and his return becomes an even smarter decision.
A tutor for the future of the franchise
The Steelers will be planning for the future despite Rodgers coming back for a second year. He won’t be able to play forever, which is why Howard and Allar have been picked in the last two drafts.
Could either ask for a better mentor as they prepare for long careers in the NFL? Howard’s future in Pittsburgh remains shrouded in mystery, as the team will likely trim either him or Rudolph to carry three options into the 2026 season. But if he’s retained, a second year learning from one of the game’s greats will be invaluable for his long-term prospects.
That same fact is true of Allar. There’s a widespread feeling that the 2026 third-round pick needs to refine his game, but his potential is evident. Former Penn State star A.Q. Shipley believes that learning from pro coaches and offensive coordinators will do the 22-year-old quarterback wonders - and that logic extends to studying behind Rodgers.
The AFC North is a tough division, and throwing either player in right away could easily shatter their confidence. Rodgers takes pressure off their shoulders and will be a positive influence. He’s not only returning to provide stability on the field; he’s coming back to shape the future of the franchise.
