We are now 10 days away from the Pittsburgh Steelers opening the 2020 NFL season against the New York Giants, and head coach Mike Tomlin still isn't ready to name a starter for the right tackle position. As we all know, Zach Banner and Chukwuma Okorafor have been battling all camp for the starting spot at right tackle. During today's presser, Tomlin was asked if he had an idea who the starter would be considering the official depth chart is due to come out on Monday. Tomlin answered the question in a very "Tomlin" way. After all, you never show your cards at a poker table until you absolutely have to. Tomlin answered the question by saying with a smile, "Yeah, you may see OR listed on that depth chart, on Monday, meaning O-R." Later in the presser, a follow up question on the topic in regards of the level of a chance the named starter will receive in the season opener. Tomlin responded, "You know, I think it's been a challenging decision for us, because both guys are capable. Both guys have been consistently above the line in their performance and so those are good problems to have." He continued, "I don't necessarily view it as a negative thing, where whoever gets named starter could have a short leash, etc, etc, etc. I think we've seen two guys that are capable NFL starters at that position battling it out and you know that's why we're not in a hurry to make a decision from my perspective."
So Steeler fans, it may be a while longer before Tomlin is ready to name a starter at the right tackle position. It sounds like the position will be in good hands with Banner OR Okorafor.
Tomlin discussed this topic, among other things with the media earlier today. Specifically, check around the 4:42 mark of the video below to hear Tomlin's response to the right tackle question.
