Predicting the Steelers' QB Positional Battle

At this point, there seems to be only two players who are a lock for the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph. The last spot comes down to Josh Dobbs and Landry Jones. And it's gonna be a battle.

Joshua Dobbs

Dobbs is an athletic and talented QB without much experience but high potential. He showed in his preseason games that he has a big arm and can make some plays when he has to. But, his pocket presence and consistent accuracy and below average. These two aspects can definitely improved on after a year of coaching and learning the system, so improvement is expected.

Landry Jones

Jones is a veteran QB with experience and has one a few games with the team. He knows the system and is the perfect mentor for Mason Rudolph. He is a well rounded QB, though he does not excel in any one area. Many fans think he's horrible while some think he has starting potential. I think he's right in the middle; he's a solid backup.

This battle really comes down to what the coaches see from these players during OTAs, training camp, and the preseason. With Rudolph being labeled as the "QB of the future," he needs a mentor and Ben will be focused on playing the game. Thus, Landry Jones enters this battle a step ahead of Joshua Dobbs, but Dobbs can still fight for a spot.

In the end, I think Landry Jones wins the No. 3 spot, behind Rudolph but over Dobbs. He only has a year left on his contract and the Steelers might just let him play it out. Dobbs is practice squad eligible, so they won't be losing him completely (though there is a risk of him being claimed by another team). Unless Dobbs shows vast improvements from last presason, Jones seems to have the lead on the young QB.

Conclusion: Landry Jones edges out Dobbs, but Dobbs is signed to the practice squad. He will be brought back next season when Jones's contract expires.
