It was only fitting that on 10/10 former receiver and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes stepped up to the podium at the Art Rooney Sports Complex to officially announced his retirement from the NFL. Holmes signed a one day contract to end his career with the team that he propelled to win their sixth Super Bowl.
Holmes is mostly know for his catch in Super Bowl 43 that brought the Steelers their record sixth Lombardi Trophy. As he should be. There was also the day during his rookie year that he single handedly ended the Bengals season during the last week of the season.
Cincinnati needed to win to clinch a playoff spot, but Holmes and the Steelers had other thoughts. Early in overtime Ben Roethlisberger found Holmes on a quick slant and that was all the room he needed.
The catch during the Super Bowl deserves to be his defining moment, but his efforts throughout the playoffs that season we're heroic.
It started with the Steelers offense sputting at home against San Diego. The Chargers jumped out to an early lead after Philip Rivers delivered a long touchdown on their opening drive. Things weren't going their way until this...
Then it was off to the AFC Championship game the next week.
He will always have a place in Steelers history. If it wasn't for the Immaculate Reception his catch would go down as the best ever. We have to give that the nod though because it started it all back in 1972.
