Essex played college football at Northwestern University, where he was a four-year starter on the offensive line. He was selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft, and he played for the team for six seasons from 2005 to 2010. After leaving the Steelers, Essex played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2011 before retiring from professional football. In total, he played in 99 NFL games, starting in 28 of them - so his insight is invaluable.

Since retiring from football, Essex has been involved in various business ventures, including owning a gym and working in real estate. He's since joined the SteelerNation Multimedia Team.
