On paper, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a terrific offseason and maybe even the best in the entire NFL. Several holes all over the depth chart were filled and the roster seems much more rounded out than it did in May of 2022. Every transaction could certainly be looked back as a positive one if Mike Tomlin's group is competitive in the AFC North and beyond in 2023. Not every decision has been approved by fans and analysts throughout the league, however. The organization decided to retain Offensive Coordinator, Matt Canada and he will call the plays for the third straight season.

Pittsburgh's run to end the 2022 season is likely what granted Canada another year to prove himself. He will get a second-year quarterback in Kenny Pickett who had a solid final month or so of his rookie year and new weapons, Allen Robinson and Darnell Washington to go along with a strong unit at all of the skill positions on offense. He will have no excuses not to perform much better in 2023 as the head of the offense.
As it turns out, people are still critiquing the Steelers front office staff for hanging onto Canada and keeping him in his current role. Marcus Whitman, an NFL analyst on YouTube and host of the Fully Inflated Football Podcast took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to highlight some of the worst moves by all NFL teams throughout the 2023 offseason.
He didn't think of Canada at first, but was quick to respond to his own tweet and contemplate if Pittsburgh's decision to retain Canada was worse than the Green Bay Packers hanging onto Defensive Coordinator, Joe Barry.
Although I'll be honest the Steelers keeping Matt Canada is is in contention.

Not only were the Steelers dead last in the league in passing touchdowns, but also 28th in total touchdowns and 26th in points scored. Pittsburgh was the only team in the bottom 13 of the league in points per game that had a winning record. Imagine what the group could be capable of if the offense was simply in the top half of the league in scoring. The defense, when healthy, is there, but Canada does not deserve the benefit of the doubt in 2023.
Pittsburgh brought in who could be the backup plan in the middle of the season if Canada isn't cutting it. Newest offensive assistant, Glenn Thomas could be on a short list with quarterbacks coach, Mike Sullivan if the offense struggles early in the year like it did in 2022. Whitman's critique of the Steelers offseason decision to bring the play-caller back is well warranted.
Anybody who pays a lick of attention to football and the NFL could tell you that Canada will have one more chance to prove his worth in 2023. Despite a late season surge in 2022, many expected him to be gone, but it's believed that could have hurt Pickett's progression as a young quarterback. But, what else could hurt him is a second year with Canada that sees him take a step back. Tomlin and co. better believe they have their guy or it could be another rough offensive season.

Steelers Offseason Hard To Criticize, But Canada's Return Not One To Ignore
It's quite possible that Pittsburgh could be given the gold medal for best 2023 offseason, but after the 2023 season is over, looking back to Canada's return could either be an extremely underrated piece of the puzzle or a devastating mistake. Time will tell, but Steelers fans shouldn't hold their breath. It's hard to imagine Canada making a significant jump in his third season as the team's play-caller.
