The Pittsburgh Steelers made a surprising move on Tuesday by reportedly appointing Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator, a decision that initially raised some eyebrows among Steelers fans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have hired Arthur Smith as their next offensive coordinator.
However, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano, this choice has garnered significant support from experts and analysts due to Smith's wealth of experience as an offensive coordinator in the league.
A Key Factor for the Steelers
One of the key factors that drew the Steelers to Smith was his prior experience as an offensive coordinator in the NFL. Smith served as the OC for the Tennessee Titans during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, a period during which the Titans' offense experienced a remarkable resurgence and achieved significant success.
"They wanted somebody who had done it before. An experienced offensive coordinator who had success in the league at that position. That was one of their goals when they went into this process and Arthur Smith certainly fits that bill."
During his tenure with the Titans, Smith showcased his versatility as an offensive coordinator by successfully operating in various offensive schemes. The Steelers are hopeful that his diverse experience will bring a fresh perspective to their offensive strategies.
Graziano and the ESPN panel wholeheartedly endorse the hiring of Smith, and for good reason. Under Smith's guidance, the Titans achieved a 9-7 record in 2019 and an impressive 11-5 record in 2020. They also had success in the postseason during those two seasons; something that the Steelers have not been able to do since the 2016 season. Smith's ability to steer the Titans' offense to success has undoubtedly played a significant role in earning him the Steelers' trust.
Graziano elaborated further on why he really believes the Steelers decided to go forward with Smith.
“Arthur Smith, a guy who’s experienced, had success, has been able to operate a couple different ways as an offensive coordinator and they just feel like he’ll bring a fresh perspective to what they are trying to do on the offensive side of the ball.”
While Smith's tenure with the Titans solidified his reputation as a capable offensive coordinator, his subsequent journey as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons presented unforeseen challenges. Over the course of three consecutive seasons, the Falcons struggled, posting 7-10 records each year. Ultimately, the Falcons parted ways with Smith after the 2023 season.
This brief detour in his coaching career has raised concerns among some Steelers fans, but it's important to recognize the strengths he brings as an offensive mind.
One cannot ignore the impact Smith had on the Titans' offense during his time as their offensive coordinator. Notably, the Steelers' offensive scheme bears similarities to that of the Titans, and this alignment should bode well for the team.
