Former Steelers Defensive Tackle Armon Watts Detailed Why He Chose To Sign With The Patriots Over Pittsburgh

Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman, Armon Watts decided to move on after one season in Pittsburgh. The veteran provided depth for the position group. He didn't have a single start in the 2023 season and was only used in 27% of defensive plays. The 27-year-old, who turns 28 in July, agreed to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots near the start of the 2024 free agency period.

Watts' biggest contribution to the team might've been a speech around Christmas time that registered deeply with his position mates. Statistically, his half a sack, three quarterback hits, and 15 total tackles were fine from a depth player, but don't scream anything special. Watts recently divulged what led to his decision to leave the Steel City via Boston flagship radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub reporter, Alex Barth, on X.    

"Pittsburgh showed some interest, but I feel like at the end of the day, New England wanted me more," Watts explained. "It's a good organization."  

New England has a history of being a great organization under the leadership of Bill Belichick, but he's now gone. Former longtime Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo is taking over. This isn't to say that the whole organization is going down the tube with their tenured leader gone, but they are a franchise firmly in transition. 

Pittsburgh has stability at the head coach position, with Mike Tomlin returning for his 18th year in 2024. General Manager Omar Khan is still relatively new to the gig since taking over for Kevin Colbert in 2022, but has been with the organization for much longer. 

Stability in an organization is one thing, but not necessarily a driving factor for a free agent. Watts had started 12 games for the Chicago Bears in 2022 and nine for the Minnesota Vikings in 2021. As his usage in Pittsburgh was limited, perhaps a promise of more time on the field swayed him into moving further east. 

Steelers Likely Already Filled Watts' Spot

The defensive line of Pittsburgh is expected to be led by Cam Heyward and Larry Ogunjobi in 2024. Keeanu Benton performed impressively during his rookie season and is considered a valuable asset. Montravius Adams signed a two-year contract to stay with the team. In addition, Pittsburgh also added veteran Dean Lowry to replace Watts.

Lowry, like Watts, comes to Pittsburgh after playing for a pair of NFC North teams. He also fits a similar mold, as he is a former starter brought in as depth.
