The Pittsburgh Steelers made significant moves on the offensive side of the ball this offseason. They completely overhauled their quarterback room, bringing in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, who are set to compete for the starting position throughout the season. Wilson will begin in the starting role, with Fields having the opportunity to challenge him for the job.

During the 2023 season, the Steelers' offense struggled significantly, ranking near the bottom in every key metric under the direction of Matt Canada. This led to his historic midseason firing

After the season, the Steelers hired former Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator. Smith comes to Pittsburgh with high expectations, thanks to his success as the Tennessee Titans' coordinator, where he implemented a highly effective play-action pass scheme featuring strong ground-and-pound rush attacks.

Steelers fans are hopeful that Smith can bring a similar system to Pittsburgh. To maximize the effectiveness of this scheme, a strong offensive line is crucial. Wilson, known for holding the ball longer than most quarterbacks to allow plays to develop, will rely heavily on improved offensive line performance in 2024.

Steelers offensive tackle Broderick Jones is entering his second season. While the offensive line has seen improvements this offseason, it remains young. However, Jones remains optimistic, telling the media after Organized Team Activities that he believes the offense is going to be scary good.

“We really have been doing really basic stuff. Not nothing to complicated, so I feel like when we actually really open up the playbook and see what we can do as an offense, I feel like we will be a dangerous offense.”

Steelers players have been enthusiastic about the offensive system Smith is starting to implement. As the system progresses and becomes more complex, it will be exciting to see how the offense continues to improve in 2024.

Wilson joins Pittsburgh after two challenging seasons with the Denver Broncos and is eager to prove he can still perform at a Super Bowl quarterback level. The Steelers' offensive line saw significant improvements during the draft, securing Troy Fautanu in the first round as a valuable pick and selecting center Zach Frazier in the second round. Both young prospects have the potential to be day-one starters.

Veteran Isaac Seumalo will anchor and lead the offensive line, providing crucial experience and stability. With Smith's new system and the enhanced offensive line play, the running back duo of Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren is poised for career years in 2024. Jones' confidence in the team's potential, combined with improved quarterback play, a better system, and overall upgrades, suggests that the Steelers' offense could surprise many in 2024.

Steelers' Offense Still Has One Major Worry

The only concern for the Steelers team is their wide receiver room. They traded away star wide receiver Diontae Johnson, and throughout the offseason, they have been searching for someone to complement George Pickens. Although they have brought in help, no new addition has truly excited Steelers fans. Many pundits believe the Steelers have one of the weakest wide receiver rooms in the NFL.

With Smith's new system and a strong running game carrying the offense, Steelers fans are hopeful that someone outside of Pickens will step up and have a breakout year. While it's impossible to have playmakers in every area, the Steelers' only notable hiccup is their wide receiver room. They should be able to overcome this challenge with speedy receivers and an effective new system. Overall, the Steelers' offense has significant potential heading into 2024.
