The Pittsburgh Steelers were playing against the Cleveland Browns when kicker Chris Boswell was called upon to run a fake field goal. It was a 28-yard attempt, and the game was tied 3-3 late in the second quarter. Boswell received the ball and rolled out, trying to find an open man.

Unable to find any options in the end zone, Boswell headed toward the sideline. A Browns defender, charging full speed, collided with Boswell, knocking him out of bounds. It was a frightening moment for Boswell and the Steelers as their star kicker had to be taken to the locker room before halftime.

That play remains etched in the memories of Steelers fans as one of the team's more infamous bloopers. Attempting a fake field goal can make you look either very clever or not so wise—that's the nature of taking such risks. Fake field goals and trick plays can be game-changers, but they can also backfire. In this case, the Steelers missed out on three points and their kicker got injured.

Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz recently debuted his new podcast, The Christian Kuntz Podcast. Alongside co-hosts Vinnie Candelore and Tre Tipton, Kuntz discussed the infamous Boswell fake field goal attempt against the Browns, revealing what really happened from his perspective.

"This whole play was messed up from the jump," Kuntz said. "It was tough to hear. There was supposed to be a motion. It just got a little discombobulated. And the play got messed up. The timing messed up. And once the timing is messed up, this is what happens."

Kuntz detailed how quickly the fake field goal attempt went awry. When running fakes, everyone must be on the same page; even the slightest hiccup can lead to disaster. According to Kuntz, many things went wrong, and Boswell paid the price.

Boswell took a hard hit. After the play, the broadcast showed Kuntz talking to an injured Boswell. Kuntz' co-hosts on his podcast asked him what he was telling Boswell at that moment.

"I'm carrying his helmet. I'm like, 'Dude, are you good?' He didn’t look good. His nose was bleeding. He got crushed by one of those d-linemen running full speed. It should've been a penalty actually."

Surprising plays like running a fake field goal are always shocking and exciting. However, they are a major gamble, and the coaches calling the plays are essentially going all in. The Steelers have seen some great trick plays work out in their favor (Super Bowl XL), but they've also experienced the downside, such as the infamous Boswell fake field goal attempt.

During the debut episode of Kuntz's new podcast, many interesting topics came up. Kuntz shared a funny story about how Steelers star TJ Watt trash talks in a unique way. However, his perspective on the Boswell fake field goal attempt was particularly intriguing.

Steelers' Infamous Fake Punt Play Call

Many Steelers fans remember that exact play and what they were thinking in the moment: take the points. The Steelers chose to go for it all, and it didn't work out. However, that play pales in comparison to the fake punt the Steelers ran against the New Orleans Saints with a four-point lead in the fourth quarter and under five minutes to go.

That may be one of the worst fake play calls ever purely because of the situation. It made sense what the Steelers were trying to do, but in that spot, just punt the football.
