The Pittsburgh Steelers and every other team throughout the NFL will spend a lot of time during training camp and the preseason trying to figure out the best approach in response to the league's new kickoff rules. The new setup will go through a trial run in 2024, and no one is quite sure if it will be around for the long-term future. It is going to challenge special teams' units and returns for touchdowns could end up being more possible than in past years. Danny Smith will lead the charge for Pittsburgh when it comes to developing the best strategy.

Rumors swirled during NFL draft week when Jaylen Warren suggested Smith may be interested in using quarterback Justin Fields on returns. It will be important to have dynamic play-makers be a part of the group, but it probably wouldn't be wise to have your second-string signal-caller out there several times a game. There could be another key offensive contributor that makes an appearance from time to time, however, according to Andrew Fillipponi.

Gotta consider using dynamic playmakers with new kickoff rule.
The idea of using George Pickens on the kick return team is certainly intriguing. He has the ability to beat defenders when given space, and that's exactly would could end up happening with the new rules. The main issue with the premise is that the Steelers' wide receiving core is depleted and without much proven depth. One kickoff gone wrong could leave Pickens with an injury that could have easily been avoided.
There is always the chance that the Steelers make a move for a top-tier wideout, but even then it still might not be the wisest decision to have Pickens returning kicks at any point throughout the 2024 season. Smith is potentially getting creative with the usage of Pickens in practice, but it's important to note he has not been included in any live drills.

Cordarrelle Patterson was signed specifically to run back kicks for Pittsburgh, but he remains on the non-football injury list as camp is nearing the end of its second week. This is a concerning ailment for the organization, especially given the fact that it is Patterson's hamstring. The good news for fans is that Patterson was seen working off to the side during Thursday's practice.

Patterson moving around on the sidelines likely means that he is nearing a return. He won't be used too much on offense, but could be a big-time difference-maker for Pittsburgh when it comes to returning kicks. Field position is always crucial and the Steelers haven't been great when it comes to that in recent years. A healthy Patterson is extremely important entering the 2024 season.

Steelers Must Get Creative On Kickoffs In 2024
It is more than just the return game that will be making adjustments. The kickoff team and Chris Boswell will also be working with these new rules for the first time. Time will tell if Pittsburgh has the advantage in this phase of the game or if it potentially hinders the unit's ability to consistently have solid field position. Throwing Pickens out there could just be a training camp fun thing to do while Patterson gets to full strength.
