The Pittsburgh Steelers have experienced their share of drama with wide receivers in recent years, and the 2023 season was no exception. Diontae Johnson and George Pickens were at the center of much controversy, which reportedly influenced the Steelers' decision to trade Johnson early in the offseason.

This shift puts a lot of focus on Pickens, who is set to be the top wide receiver in his third NFL season. It's the first time Pickens is expected to be the primary target, and there are concerns surrounding him. Last season, Pickens faced scrutiny over his attitude and effort, particularly when he expressed frustration with his role in the offense and refused to block for Jaylen Warren during a key play.
However, Pickens ended the 2023 season on a positive note, demonstrating a better attitude. The Steelers are hopeful that he can build on that momentum in 2024. Despite initial concerns when reports surfaced about a heated exchange between Pickens and new Wide Receivers Coach Zach Azzanni at the start of training camp, it appears to have had a beneficial effect. Ray Fittipaldo noted that Pickens has shown a markedly improved mindset since that confrontation.
"Actually after butting heads with new WRs coach Zach Azzanni early in camp, he's been a model citizen on the practice field. He gives good effort, no outbursts or anything of that sort."
Azzanni joined the Steelers coaching staff with extensive experience, having coached wide receivers since 1999. Known for his intense coaching style, Azzanni doesn't tolerate nonsense and demands that his wide receivers embody the team's mentality. He isn't interested in dealing with divas and makes that clear from the start.

This no-nonsense approach led to a heated exchange between Azzanni and Pickens early in training camp, sparking concerns among some Steelers fans who feared Pickens might become a distraction. However, others speculated that this confrontation could be beneficial in the long run.
So far, it seems that this initial conflict has had a positive impact. Fittipaldo, who closely monitors team practices, has noted that Pickens has responded well to Azzanni's tough love. It appears that Azzanni's approach might be just what Pickens needs to reach his full potential.
Steelers' George Pickens Has The Potential To Be Tremendous
Pickens is one of the most talented wide receivers in the league, though he's struggled to fully showcase his abilities due to an underperforming offense and inconsistent quarterback play. Despite these challenges, Pickens has still made a significant impact for the Steelers, so much so that the team felt confident trading Johnson without immediately finding a replacement. This reflects the high regard in which the Steelers hold Pickens.

However, Pickens' career start has been marred by issues with his attitude. While his playmaking ability is exceptional, his future in Pittsburgh is not entirely secure, as the Steelers have a history of not retaining wide receivers with diva tendencies. Pickens has occasionally exhibited such traits, though his passion for the game sometimes leads to these outbursts.
Steelers fans should not lose hope, though. Pickens has shown immense potential and delivered impressive performances even with less-than-ideal conditions. He's also been in very frustrating circumstances that would upset any sane star player.
With a promising 2024 season ahead and the guidance of Azzanni, there are strong indications that Pickens could have a breakout year. The pairing of Pickens and Azzanni appears to be a positive development for both the player and the team.
