The Pittsburgh Steelers are always looking for additional depth to help the team out in any way. Even with three current starting-caliber safeties (as well as an All-Pro), the Steelers wouldn't mind some extra help there, especially after Ryan Watts was placed on season-ending Injured Reserve (IR). After a couple weeks of searching, the Steelers bypassed all the new faces and brought in an old friend instead.

Steelers drafting Terrell Edmunds in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
The Steelers have officially signed Terrell Edmunds off of the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad. Edmunds was the starting strong safety for the Steelers for five seasons, so he is already very familiar with Head Coach Mike Tomlin and Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin. After bouncing around the league for a couple of seasons, he officially returns to the place that gave him his start in the NFL.

Edmunds had five interceptions and five sacks during his time in Pittsburgh, as he was used in a multitude of ways. In 2019, he racked up 105 total tackles while acting as a box safety at times. His deep zone play was concerning, but he was a great tackler, and he did well in man coverage against running backs and tight ends. The Steelers are hoping to get that kind of production from him again.

Steelers' Terrell Edmunds (34) did a one-year prove it deal in 2022, then returned to the team in 2024.
Edmunds even teased the reunion on X, and it has been confirmed to be true. He will be on the Steelers' 53-man roster after being a practice squad elevation for the Jaguars in Week 1 of 2024.

Edmunds signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2023 offseason on a one-year deal, who then shipped him off to the Tennessee Titans along with a pick in exchange for Kevin Byard. After that season, he signed with the Jaguars, but he could not crack their active roster. Not only is he finally back on a roster, but he's on a very familiar one.

Steelers safety Terrell Edmunds (#34) warms up on the field at Acrisure Stadium prior to a 2022 preseason game at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA.
Even though Edmunds likely won't get a lot of reps, the Steelers know exactly what they are getting from him. They have a strong tackler that can play special teams, safety, and even linebacker if needed. The Steelers know all about how important depth is after they lost almost the entire safety core at the end of 2023, so why not keep beefing up with cheap, quality options, especially if they already know how to deploy those options.
What do you think about the Steelers' bringing back Edmunds for a second stint? Let us know in the comments.
