The Pittsburgh Steelers don't have one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but the organization does have one of the deepest quarterback rooms in the NFL. Russell Wilson is a quality starter, and Justin Fields is more than capable as a backup. Even Kyle Allen has a decent amount of experience that fans and the coaching staff might feel comfortable with him in the game. The room is deep, but the future of the quarterback room in Pittsburgh is a highly debated topic.

Fields and Wilson have both played well in the games they have started for the Steelers during the 2024 season. Fields led Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record through six games while Wilson has a record of 4-1 through five games. Wilson obviously has more experience in the league and is a better passer, but playing Fields has its benefits as well thanks to his mobility. Both quarterbacks are only signed in Pittsburgh through the end of the 2024 season, but it is likely that only one of them is back in 2025.
Mike Florio spoke about the future of the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, and he brought up one possibility that probably hasn't crossed a lot of fans' minds.
"They're gonna have an exclusive window to do a long-term deal after the season with both guys," Florio said. "You're gonna sign one and probably not sign the other. But if both of them get interest and they get close enough to free agency and the Steelers aren't willing to pay, there's a chance both of them go somewhere else. The Steelers, I think, if they were admitting with candor what they'd prefer, they prefer Fields to be the guy for the future. There's a much longer future with Fields than with Wilson."
The Steelers will have a chance to sign either, or both, quarterbacks after the 2024 season ends and before free agency begins. Pittsburgh must make the deal during that time because there will be a lot of quarterback-needy teams when free agency rolls around. Teams like the New York Giants, New York Jets, and Las Vegas Raiders all do not have a starting-caliber quarterback for the 2025 season, and they might look to sign Wilson or Fields to pair them with a rookie in the quarterback room.

Both quarterbacks have played well enough to be the starter in Pittsburgh in 2025 or on another team. Fans are fairly split on who they want to see at the position in the future, as a lot of fans want the team to re-sign Fields due to his age and upside. The fourth-year quarterback is the more exciting choice as he is one of the best runners of the football at the quarterback position, but his passing skills still has a long way to go if he wants to compete with the other starters around the league.
Steelers' Russell Wilson Will Likely Be Back In Pittsburgh In 2025
Florio is probably correct about Fields, in that he will probably be playing elsewhere in 2025. However it is hard to imagine Wilson going to another team at this point in his career. He is nearing his 36th birthday, and the quarterback wants to win. He clearly loves the winning culture in Pittsburgh and has ingratiated himself into the community.

The elephant in the room is the contract, which is something a lot of fans are worried about since Wilson has signed big deals throughout his career. Many insiders believe the quarterback will take a slightly team-friendly deal to stay in Pittsburgh, which will then help the Steelers build their roster and be able to compete for a Super Bowl.
