Quarterback Russell Wilson is in the midst of his 13th career season but according to a football insider, his career at the Pittsburgh Steelers might soon come to an end.

Steelers' Russell Wilson speaks to the media after a big win over the Bengals.

He entered the league in 2012 as the star player for the Seattle Seahawks, where he performed well until 2021. He then joined the Denver Broncos for just two years. As a veteran player, he signed with the Steelers in 2024, joining quarterback Justin Fields in a starting position. Wilson’s season with the Steelers was off to a very slow start because of a calf injury that sidelined him for several weeks.

Once he entered the fray, the Steelers won four consecutive games, and the Steelers are currently placed second in the AFC North rankings, behind the Ravens. During this successful run, Wilson threw for 12 touchdowns, three interceptions, and 1,784 yards.

Top-rated Bitcoin sports betting platforms have given the Steelers odds of +1800 of winning the AFC North division, and +10000 of winning the Super Bowl, which is highly unlikely. These platforms also allow bettors to wager on specific players, for example, bettors can wager on whether Wilson will be a touchdown scorer or the first or last touchdown scorer in any upcoming games.

Despite these successes, an insider has now come forward with information that Wilson might be on his way out again after a single season with the team. Fans are already doubting his longevity at the team, believing his future will be non-existent if the Steelers can’t knock the Baltimore Ravens off the top spot during the playoffs’ Wild Card round.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, it is likely that Wilson will be out of a job soon. Talking on 93.7 The PM Team with Poni & Mueller, Florio stated, “If they lose a game on Saturday night, you think anyone wants Russel Wilson back next year?”

Although Wilson only signed a one-year contract, which started in March 2024, there were initial hopes that this would be extended. But these hopes have been dashed, with many vying for Wilson to leave.

Despite the initial success of the team after Wilson joined, he suffered a fall from grace. The last four matches of the campaign were nightmares. The team went 0-4, dropping to the sixth seed in the AFC playoffs as a result.

During this losing streak, the Pittsburgh team was outscored 109-57, and Wilson received most of the blame for this poor performance. He passed over 150 yards only once, taking 14 sacks and his performance regressed completely.

Wilson’s critics - of which there are many - have pointed out that although he has been a leader in the past, his age, recurring injuries, and overall lack of performance may be catching up to him. Veteran quarterbacks often face scrutiny the second their performance drops, and the NFL is known to quickly move on from these players who can’t deliver.

Wilson’s lack of adaptability, especially during high-pressure games, has only worsened the situation. Gans has expressed frustration at the situation, believing the team would have done much better if they had a consistent quarterback. Analysts suggest that the Steelers will be looking for a younger and more reliable quarterback during the offseason, possibly through draft or free agency.

When questioned whether this ongoing poor performance, especially against the Baltimore Ravens, will end Wilson’s career, Florio stated that he can’t imagine a team would offer him a starting role based on how he has been playing. He also mentioned that he does not believe Wilson will accept a contract where he is a backup player.

“You’re right because nobody’s gonna hand him a starting job, and he’s not gonna go the Joe Flacco route where he takes whatever spot he can on a depth chart. He’ll walk away,” said Florio of the situation.

Wilson is trying to win back favor, especially as he will become a free agent during the offseason. Whether he succeeds or not remains uncertain, but his time is running out as the draft is approaching, and the Steelers will soon have to decide on Wilson’s future.
