Steelers Still May Be Planning Crucial Wide Receiver Addition: "Ya Never Know"

The Pittsburgh Steelers were set up to have one of the NFL's best wide receiving duos in 2025 after the acquisition of DK Metcalf. This was the case until General Manager Omar Khan made the decision to trade George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. The team is now seemingly right back in the same position as it was when the 2024 Organized Team Activities (OTAs) began regarding the questionable depth at receiver. This has sparked plenty of controversy among fans and pundits alike. It would be wise for the front office to somehow find another addition to the receiving corps, as the offense wouldn't exactly scare many defenses if important games were being played currently.

There have been some more trade rumors surrounding the Steelers and wide receivers, but the more likely outcome is signing a veteran free agent. Unfortunately, some of the options on the market may not be interested in playing for Pittsburgh if the organization's quarterback situation remains under question. That could be why the franchise has yet to bring in another reliable wideout following the Pickens trade.

In terms of free agency, the two names to keep an eye on moving forward are Keenan Allen and Amari Cooper. The two veterans are likely going to play football in 2025; it is just a matter of where. Pittsburgh should be an attractive place to get targets based on the current make-up of the receiving corps, but certain players like Allen and Cooper may be looking for a bit more in a new team.

Gerry Dulac, who is a trusted reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, held a fan chat on Wednesday and answered plenty of questions about the Steelers. Someone specifically asked what the chances are that Cooper could be signed before training camp starts. Normally, Dulac is very precise when it comes to his opinions, but he left the door wide open when responding to this inquiry.

"Ya never know," Dulac wrote.

There's no doubt that an experienced wideout like Cooper would significantly help the Steelers. While he may not be able to perform at the very highest of levels as he once did, many fans would likely take his efforts over someone that doesn't possess a proven rรฉsumรฉ. There is still time to make a big signing, and Dulac didn't shut down the idea of it happening for the Steelers.

The Pickens trade was certainly a head-scratcher for fans, but not because he was expected to be in the Steel City long-term. Making a move to acquire Metcalf was a clear indicator that Pickens would be gone after the 2025 campaign, but the unfortunate part is that the duo won't have the chance to see the field together. Some in the locker room will have the chance to step up, but there also is a potential opening for a player like Cooper if the front office wants to make an addition.

It is important in the NFL to have a formidable offense, and it's easy to argue that the Steelers have not had anything close to that in several years. A passing attack is pivotal at the professional level in the modern era, so it would make sense for Pittsburgh to bring in a veteran such as Cooper to bolster the unit, which is currently being led by Metcalf.

Steelers Continue To Disappoint Fan Base In Two Key Areas

The quarterback and wide receiver positions are arguably two of the most important depth-chart spots throughout all of professional sports. Pittsburgh hasn't necessarily had these two areas buttoned down in recent years. The excitement blossomed once Aaron Rodgers was expected to sign, and a duo in Metcalf and Pickens was expected to be present, but worries are becoming more prevalent after recent happenings. The team is on extremely thin ice with the fan base.
