The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a wide range of moves this offseason that have significantly changed the roster. These moves have sparked widespread discussion among fans and analysts. However, big changes are not just happening in Pittsburgh. Around the league, several players have either requested trades or are rumored to be on the move as teams continue adjusting their rosters. Some of these potentially available players could be ideal fits for the Steelers, especially as they look to fill remaining gaps and strengthen their depth heading into the new season.

One of the names currently dominating headlines as a potential trade target is Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Reports have surfaced suggesting that Ramsey possibly wants out of Miami, and with several other big moves happening across the league, fans and analysts alike believe a trade for Ramsey could realistically be on the table. That includes Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, who recently discussed the possibility of Pittsburgh acquiring Ramsey during a recent episode of his podcast, Kaboly + Mack.

"His base salary is only $1.25 [million] this year, so maybe that is doable," Kaboly said.

One of the biggest concerns surrounding the potential acquisition of Ramsey is the cost that would come with him. Since Ramsey is still under contract, the Steelers would be responsible for taking on the remainder of his guaranteed money. However, Kaboly pointed out that Ramsey’s base salary is actually lower than expected, making the idea of bringing him to Pittsburgh more financially feasible than initially assumed.

This potential move has gained even more traction in recent days following the Baltimore Ravens’ acquisition of cornerback Jaire Alexander. Both Alexander and Ramsey had been rumored to be on Pittsburgh’s radar as potential upgrades for their secondary. Now that one of those top targets has landed with a division rival, it not only intensifies the competition in the AFC North, but also adds pressure on the Steelers to respond. With Alexander off the table, it makes Ramsey feel like a more logical target to pursue, especially if the team wants to keep pace with the strengthening rosters within their division.

The Steelers have already taken steps to bolster their secondary with some notable additions this offseason. One of the most significant moves was the acquisition of veteran cornerback Darius Slay. After playing a role in helping the Philadelphia Eagles win a Super Bowl last season, Slay chose to bring his experience and leadership to Pittsburgh, signing a one-year deal. Despite being new to the organization, Slay has quickly embraced his role and expressed genuine enthusiasm about joining the Steelers. He’s made it clear that he’s not only here to contribute on the field, but also to serve as a mentor for the younger players in the secondary, something that could prove invaluable as the team continues to build for both the present and the future.

With Slay currently on just a one-year contract, there’s still plenty of room for Ramsey to step into a significant role if he were to join the Steelers. Even with Slay in the mix, Ramsey’s elite skill set and proven track record would make him an undeniable asset to the secondary. His presence could elevate the entire defense and offer long-term value beyond this season.

That said, while Ramsey’s current contract is manageable, it still comes with a considerable price tag. The Steelers would need to carefully weigh whether his talent and potential impact justify the financial commitment. Just because the move is possible from a financial standpoint, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bargain, and the front office will need to decide if this potential addition aligns with both their short-term needs and long-term strategy.

Steelers Have Other Guys To Pay As Well

The Steelers still have several key players to consider financially. Earlier this offseason, they committed to a substantial long-term deal with veteran wide receiver DK Metcalf, and they’re currently navigating challenging contract negotiations with star edge rusher TJ Watt. With a significant amount already allocated, or in the process of being negotiated, the team’s financial capability is being tested. While the Steelers do have the financial means to make additional moves right now, it raises the question of which players and positions the organization will choose to prioritize moving forward. Any new acquisition, especially one with a sizeable price tag, will need to fit into a broader strategy that balances both present competitiveness and long-term planning.
