The Pittsburgh Steelers put the NFL world on notice once again on Monday, as General Manager Omar Khan made the move to acquire both Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith from the Miami Dolphins, but in exchange, dealt safety Minkah Fitzpatrick back to the team that drafted him. Smith will be a big-time addition to the offense, while Ramsey will provide the same amount of depth on the defensive side. The one huge question is regarding where the defender will line up. He could work in the slot, on the outside, or even at safety, now that there is a hole there with Fitzpatrick out of the picture.

Khan has not been afraid to be active throughout the 2025 offseason, and that has earned him some praise and criticism alike. No one will know if all of the moves will truly pay off for the organization until the meaningful games are played, but there is definitely a sense of cautious optimism in the Steel City. The roster has been completely flipped upside down in some areas.
Not everyone is a fan of the moves that the Steelers have made, however. Specifically, the addition of Ramsey, but subtraction of Fitzpatrick, had one league general manager scratching his head. Speaking anonymously to Eric Williams of Fox Sports, the NFL executive told the reporter that there is no way that Ramsey is worth his contract, especially if he is filling Fitzpatrick's position at safety.
"Ramsey at safety is intriguing to me, but not at that money," the general manager said. "He is still a starting corner but again, his performance will not equal his pay."
The last part of the quote stings a little. Not only did the Steelers take on a large contract, but the organization even gave Ramsey a small pay bump for the 2025 campaign, which has some questioning the move. The general manager continued giving his opinion, stating that Fitzpatrick is a better option for many reasons. The Dolphins even received a compliment.
"[Minkah] Fitzpatrick is a better safety โ younger, cheaper and less drama," the general manager said. "I give Miami kudos for rectifying a mistake contract extension from a year ago."
It is impossible to tell which franchise won this trade right now, but one thing the general manager failed to mention to Williams, or it wasn't mentioned in the article, was the addition of Smith. The tight end could make a significant impact for the Steelers' offense and be the reason why, in the end, Pittsburgh is looked at as the bigger beneficiary of the deal.

The ripple effect from this deal also still may not be done. There are several veteran safeties that are free agents, and Khan could be looking to target one of them on a one-year deal. The Steelers will be able to find a safety in the 2026 NFL Draft as well, with an expected 12 selections. It seems as if Pittsburgh was going to entertain trading Fitzpatrick as he entered the final year of his deal next offseason, but the more logical internal move was to do it in 2025.
Ramsey does tend to have a little bit of a temper, but the hope is that a change of scenery with one of the league's most stable organizations will have him playing at an elite level and staying out of negative headlines. The Steelers are on a quest to completely overhaul the roster in attempt to win playoffs games, and this trade displayed that.

Steelers Can't Swing And Miss After 2025 Offseason
Khan has been incredibly aggressive, which is a breath of fresh air for fans in the Steel City. The black and golf faithful expect excellence, which is why the team cannot lay a dud in 2025. If that does end up happening, there will be plenty of criticism for some time. The moves been been exciting, but the front office sure better hope that they end up working out.
