The Pittsburgh Steelers recently made headlines once again with a blockbuster trade that sent star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for tight end Jonnu Smith and cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The move has started a lot of conversation across the league, with everyone weighing in about whether the trade was a win for Pittsburgh and how these new additions will fit into the team’s scheme. Regardless of the differing opinions, one thing is certain, the Steelers have added top talent to their roster, continuing their bold approach to nearly completely reshaping the team ahead of the upcoming season.

Recently, Smith appeared as a guest on Terron Armstead’s podcast, where he talked about becoming a member of the Steelers for the first time. During the interview, Smith shared that he initially had every intention of staying in Miami. However, he explained that Miami ultimately couldn’t meet the contract terms he was seeking. Smith went on to say that it was the Steelers who truly recognized his worth, both on paper and in their scheme.

"I had to make the decision to go where I’m appreciated and viewed on paper...contract-wise as a top guy in this league which I know I am," Smith said. "Pittsburgh was the team that saw me as that."

Smith is a seasoned veteran at the tight end position, and his acquisition by the Steelers highlights just how much the organization values his experience and versatility. Smith brings with him a well-rounded skill set, as he has the blocking ability and strength of a traditional tight end, but also has the hands to serve as a reliable receiving threat in the passing game. With veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers now leading the offense, Smith adds yet another dynamic weapon for him, one who can make big plays when it matters most.

Smith’s versatility brings far more value to the Steelers than many may initially realize. While some people have questioned the need for another tight end, especially given the existing talent already on the roster, the Steelers clearly see something more. Smith’s ability to contribute both as a traditional tight end and as a receiving threat gives the offense greater flexibility and opens up new playmaking opportunities. His addition not only strengthens the depth chart, but also enhances the overall offensive strategy.

Beyond his physical skills, Smith brings years of NFL experience to a team that’s continuing to evolve. While he’s new to Pittsburgh, he’s no stranger to Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith, having worked with him in the past, an existing relationship that could greatly help his integration into the offense and make his impact even faster.

What fans already know is that the Steelers are currently one of the teams in the league with considerable salary cap space. This financial flexibility has played a crucial role in allowing the organization to pursue and execute significant roster moves, including high-profile trades like this one. Because of this cap space, the Steelers have been able to acquire talented players such as Smith and Ramsey without needing to sacrifice much, if any, of the valuable draft capital they’ve been strategically saving.

Steelers Add Key Veteran Presence

Ramsey and Smith aren’t the only seasoned veterans the Steelers have added to their roster this offseason. The front office has had a strategic approach these last few months of combining experienced, proven leaders with a new group of young, talented, and energetic rookies. This balanced combination not only strengthens the team’s ability to be competitive right now, but also allows for long-term success.
