The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off training camp last week, and there has been a lot of interesting storylines that have come out of Latrobe, PA. One of the main ones that has been discussed during camp and throughout the entire offseason has been Cordarrelle Patterson, who the Steelers signed to a two-year deal prior to the 2024 season. Patterson did not participate in mandatory minicamp, and he was not participating in training camp either.

It seemed like Patterson was an obvious cut-candidate, and many fans thought it would have came right after the 2024 season ended. Patterson did not have a great season in 2024 on special teams, and his contributions on offense were limited. It started to feel like there was a legitimate chance that Patterson would be on the roster again in 2025, but the thought of that came to an end on Monday as Pittsburgh released the veteran.

Patterson announced the news on social media himself, and he didn't sound too happy about the decision. If he wants to continue his playing career, he should have some options around the league, as he is now free to sign anywhere. Pittsburgh saved money by releasing the future Hall of Famer, which is why many assumed this would be done earlier in the 2025 offseason.

The veteran dealt with some injury issues over the last year, and it seemed as though he lost some explosiveness during the 2024 season. He was going to be buried on the depth chart at the running back position, and he would have had a decent amount of competition as a returner. It is the best move for all parties involved for the two sides to part ways. Patterson gets to sign where he wants to, which means he can pick a situation where he will see the field more, and Pittsburgh is able to save $2.8 million by making the move.
The extra cash will allow the Steelers to have some flexibility going into the 2025 season. This opens up some possibilities if the team wanted to address the wide receiver position at some point, or add some better depth along the offensive line.

Steelers' Current Running Back Room Is In Good Hands
Pittsburgh is all set at running back, and the franchise has plenty of options when it comes to returning kicks. It will be interesting to pay attention to Patterson's career and see where he ends up, and whether or not he can bounce back from a down year in 2024.
