The Pittsburgh Steelers were an extremely hard franchise to keep track of during the 2025 offseason. General Manager Omar Khan was very active in free agency and the trade market, which has led to numerous eyes focusing on the team as training camp has gotten underway. Aside from the signing of four-time MVP, Aaron Rodgers, the second most-talked about move was trading for DK Metcalf. Not too many months after, the franchise parted ways with George Pickens. The excitement in the Steel City to watch a talented duo in Metcalf and Pickens was short-lived, which has led to continuous questions about who else will step up.

There has been a lot conversation regarding who will emerge as Rodgers' second favorite target in the Steelers' passing game. Proven, veteran free agents remain available, but Pittsburgh hasn't made many attempts to sign any of then. Gabe Davis came in for a visit and ended up leaving the city without any kind of deal in hand. There is still time if Khan wants to get something done.
On Thursday evening, NFL insider Jordan Schultz dropped a huge bombshell that immediately got the league's fans theorizing. Terry McLaurin has apparently requested that the Washington Commanders trade him after contract discussions have not gone how either party would like.

In an age where receivers are getting paid $30 million or more per year, McLaurin clearly wants a significant pay bump. That is something that the Commanders have not been willing to comply with, and now he is legitimately available if Washington decides to field calls. With a projected 12 draft selections in 2026 and plenty of cap space, the Steelers could be reaching out sooner rather than later.
Schultz went on to mention that this request made by McLaurin's camp literally came on Thursday evening, as all 32 teams across the league are working on building rapport during training camps.
My understanding is Terry McLaurin’s trade request was made within the 30 minutes. https://t.co/jWgWoUAG8W

It will be interesting to see if the Commanders cave to McLaurin's contract demands, or if another blockbuster trade ends up happening. Pittsburgh has been involved in more than one during the 2025 offseason, so why not one more to completely overhaul the offense from 2024?

Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin is seen watching from the sidelines during a road matchup in the 2024 NFL season, appearing contemplative as the game unfolds without him on the field.
McLaurin was drafted by Washington back in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and has been one of the most consistent wide receivers in the NFL since. He has not missed a game over the course of the last four seasons, so it's not like the Commanders can refuse to pay him due to injury concerns. He is as consistent as they come, which is why many wide receiver-needy teams may try to acquire him in the coming days.
The Steelers have plenty of weapons on offense after some changes, but it would be impossible to not get excited about the potential addition of McLaurin. The money may be somewhat of an issue, but Pittsburgh isn't expected to have any major financial commitment to a quarterback any time soon. It is absolutely possible for Khan to get a trade like this done from both draft capital and financial perspectives.

Steelers Would Be Wise To Trade For McLaurin
There have not been too many reports regarding Washington's desire to move on from McLaurin, but if that changes after Thursday evening's news, Pittsburgh should be at the front of the line. A duo of Metcalf and McLaurin is arguably better than one would have been with Metcalf and Pickens. Time will tell, but Khan has yet another opportunity to make the Steelers better before the 2025 season kicks off.
