Report: Steelers Officially Call Commanders To Trade For Terry McLaurin

There is no doubt that the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to mix things up during the 2025 offseason. While the organization still doesn't have a long-term answer at the quarterback position, excitement is at an all-time high in the Steel City. Adding DK Metcalf to the roster was a phenomenal acquisition, even if it meant saying goodbye to a former second-round selection in George Pickens. The offense will look to be much more dynamic with Aaron Rodgers under center, but it certainly would not hurt to have just one more legitimate pass-catcher. The opportunity to add one may currently be present.

Terry McLaurin is not happy with his current situation as the Washington Commanders refuse to pay the loyal veteran what he is worth. The wideout is looking for a new contract, but recently requested a trade because of the lack of progress on a deal. The Steelers would be an ideal landing spot for McLaurin due to Pittsburgh's cap situation and plethora of projected draft picks in 2026.

On Saturday, it was reported by DK Pittsburgh Sports that the Steelers and General Manager Omar Khan have officially reached out in an attempt to see if a McLaurin trade is feasible. Chris Halicke doesn't expect the playmaker to be wearing the black and gold, as he allegedly wants to be a top option in whatever offense he ends up in.

"However, with McLaurin searching for a situation to be the top receiver, the Steelers aren't a fit," Halicke wrote. "Thus, the team is moving onto other potential options at wide receiver."

This certainly adds an interesting element to the situation. A dynamic duo of Metcalf and McLaurin would be incredible, given the fact that the two have different styles, but the possibility appears unlikely if McLaurin wants to be the number one option. Money solves all, however, and the Steelers have that, so the right offer could still potentially get a deal done.

It would be a fascinating development if Khan and co. figured out a way to land McLaurin. The Steelers have evidently changed the way they operate from an organizational standpoint with Khan calling the shots, and a potential trade for one of the NFL's most underrated wide receivers would just add to the belief that things are changing in Pittsburgh.

It is impossible to deny the fact that McLaurin would be worth a day two pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Steelers are expected to have roughly 12 selections, so parting ways with one, or two, with the goal of solidifying the receiver position in the Steel City would be a very solid approach. Khan has proven that he will not leave any stone unturned, and this recent report suggests that Khan is still on the phones thinking about ways to make the team better.

An offense featuring Rodgers, Metcalf and McLaurin would be dangerous enough, but the Steelers have several other playmakers that are ready to make a difference. Pittsburgh is clearly in win-now mode, so it can't be ignored that the front office is doing its due diligence on McLaurin after his recent request to be shipped off out of Washington.

Steelers Could Include Current Player In Trade Package With Commanders

While Calvin Austin III has proven that he has what it takes to potentially be a second option in Pittsburgh's passing game, McLaurin would certainly be preferred. If Khan wanted to sweeten any kind of deal, Austin would be a good player to include. He is going to be a free agent after the 2025 campaign, and isn't necessarily being looked at as a long-term solution in the Steel City. It isn't the worst idea in the world to offer him to Washington as part of the bait in an attempt to land McLaurin.

Do you think that the Steelers should attempt to trade for McLaurin? Would you include Austin in a hypothetical trade scenario? Let us know in the comments below!
