Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers Alarmed By Receiver Preparation Amid Week 13 Loss: “Do The Right Route”

The Pittsburgh Steelers' 26-7 loss Sunday night at Acrisure Stadium at the hands of the Buffalo Bills was horrific in many ways -- both on and off the field. The Steelers witnessed the ever popular Renegade song get booed, as well as chants of "Fire Tomlin" from different portions of the stadium. The Steelers have been struggling on both sides of the football in 2025 and Sunday was no different. Pittsburgh took a 7-0 lead on a Jaylen Warren rushing touchdown with 8:09 left in the second quarter, but that faded quickly shortly into the beginning of the second half and the Bills never looked back.

Rodgers Nose Bandage

The headlines and quotes starting pouring in from the Steelers' locker room after the game, most of which were of negative sentiment. One statement made from quarterback Aaron Rodgers particularly stood out. Rodgers spoke with Brooke Pryor of ESPN and seemingly indicated there is a sort of disconnect in preparation amongst the players in the locker room.

"When there's film sessions, everybody shows up, and when I check to a route, you do the right route," Rodgers said. "... We have our meetings every week. We have other opportunities outside of the facility, and [I] look forward to seeing all the boys there."

That quote indicates there is some sort of disconnect with Rodgers and the wide receiver room. Rodgers, in the fourth quarter, tried to hit Jonnu Smith in the red zone. However, they were not in sync with each other as Rodgers threw the ball to the inside, but Smith ran to the outside.

"Jonnu and I just weren't on the same page," Rodgers said. "I checked to his in-breaker, and he ran an out-breaker. Jonnu is a true professional, so I'm sure he's sick about that."

There is plenty of blame and finger pointing to go around the Steelers' locker room after the Sunday night loss, which has the Steelers now at 6-6 on the year after they started the season 4-1 and saw themselves in sole possession of first place in the AFC North. Mike Tomlin, the coordinators, and even the roster construction have been a huge part of the blame throughout this recent struggle for the Steelers. No one has taken more heat than Tomlin however, as this might be the hottest his sit in the Steel City has ever been.

Steelers Clearly Lacking WR2 Option

It is hard to sit down and look at Sunday's loss without putting blame on the entire operation. However, a common issue the Steelers have found themselves facing is their lack of production on offense, specifically at the wide receiver position. The Steelers do not have a true WR2 to complement DK Metcalf and it has shown time and time again this season.

The Steelers chose add Rodgers' old teammate Marquez Valdes-Scantling just a few weeks ago, who is still sitting on their practice squad. Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson have lacked significant production in 2025, and Metcalf continues to get double-teamed.

Pittsburgh will need to figure out how to turn the page quickly on offense as they look to take on the Baltimore Ravens in a pivotal AFC North matchup in Week 14 where they are looking all over the place for answers.

What do you think is going on with the Steelers' offense and their pass-catchers? Is it lack or preparation from the receivers, Rodgers' communication, or something deeper? Be sure to comment below, or on our social media pages!
